Memtest Errors

Was getting a lot of bsods last night, not all the same but all link to memory.

Just got in from work and decided to run memtest, I had errors now I'm just trying to understand them. Annoyingly I didn't get a picture before my PC restarted itself.

I've looked for a guide and it all makes sense until it tries to explain the last column. It should be labelled "channel" to tell you which stick is the faulty one. On my results I didn't have a "channel" column I had a "CPU" column instead.

Does that mean it's the memory controller? I'm trying with a different set of ram in the alternate DIMM slots now to see what I get.

I'll try a grab a picture this time if it bombs out again.

EDIT***

This is the error screen with the second lot of RAM in the different slots.

Upped the memory controller voltage by 0.05v and dropped RAM from 1866 to 1600MHz and it has just passed in Memtest. I'm going to leave it running for a few more passes.

What is most likely to be going flaky?

Higher voltage didn't help.

Wasn't getting anywhere fast with this so took the 2600k out and replaced it with a known good 2500k.

It's early days by BSOD seem to have stopped but now I can't use either of the first 2 DIMM slots without it hanging before it even reaches BIOS. just sit there with a error on the little display on the mobo.

Error code 39 is what I get and the manual stats

"Post-memory north Bridge initialization (North bridge module specific)"

And idea what that means? Could it be the mobo as that's now the only common component across all the different hardware combinations I have tried.

Not yet, ATM I'm testing 2 DIMMS in channel 3+4 as they are the only 2 working slots ATM.

How much performance am I giving up running 2 sticks in single channel instead of 2 sticks in dual channel?

Loosened the CPU cooler last night actually and tried slot. 2+ 4 which is dual channel on my board and it worked. It was late though so went to bed after. I'll try the first slot later on.

Loosened off the CPU cooler and all seems well so I put the i7 back in and now I can't get it to blue screen at all.

Games/prime95/memtest all pass without errors. Very strange. Hopefully this has fixed it or it's the BIOS resets I have done whilst changing the CPU's.

Fingers crossed! But get the feeling they will be returning.

too tight a cooler will cause memory troubles, thats because the memory controller is now inside the cpu

I think it cuts off the signal from cpu to the memory banks
