Memtest & RAM

Hey all,

I comepleted another memtest today (the one in windows) of all unused RAM and let it go all the way to 2242% I think about 3 hours or so. Returned no errors at all.

Sometimes my computer doesnt respond when it is in standby (i.e.) wont come out cos the RAM crashes and sometimes blue screens about 4 seconds after out of standby although it hasnt done it for a while now. So should I run a longer memtest or not fault the RAM. I think my version of XP is a bit dodgy as I've had and my brother has had trouble with it and it always finds a whole host of errors on the diskcheck all the time. My previous copy on my old PC never had ANY errors at all. Is the RAM still to blame or XP?

P.S. I'm thinking of upgrading to Vista and getting a decent 2GB set or maybe 4GB if the price is decent.

Any advice, Cheers

I suspected that, but I've had this for about 4 years now and its been fine all that time. I sthere any other utility that lets me scan my hard drive and/or fix it?

Scan disk the drive:

- Click on Start and then My Computer.
- Right click on disk you wish to scan and then click on properties.
- Click on Tools tab at top of window.
- Click on Check Now in the Error Checking section.
- Click on boxes to automatically fix file system errors and scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.

I did all that you suggested mate and still there are errors on the drive. I even downloaded a utility that checks your drive and then fixes errors. My drive is in use it said and it did a fix on the restart. But when I scanned again, there were still errors. Still bad sectors on one part of the partition. I have a suspicion though that my version of XP is partly to blame but then again so could my HD

I think you have to face the fact that your HDD is dying. I'd backup anything you need immediately and order a replacement. What make and model is it ? It may still be under warranty.

its been doing this for about 3 months or so and the HDD runs fine never really had any problems with it so baffles me. But I think its time I got a SATA drive anyway so will do that. thanks guys!

i tend to not use the scandisk in windows. (never did like it)

i prefer the one booting up (start >run >cmd hit return)
then type in chdsk c: /f/v/r

If there is any probs it will display them on screen or else in the windows log files (event viewer in system)

resume from stand-by (STR stand-by atleast) fails for me at higher ram Oc's. but, i think this is to be expected - remember, the only thing keeping the data in ram alive during standbuy is the +5VSB rail, and thats worth 15W tops on very good psu's. usb, ps2, nic's and ram are all hanging off that 1 rail in stand-by. and i suspect when oc'd its just not enough to keep the memory contents.

So if I had a beefier PSU, this wouldnt be a problem?

My PSU is 520W and thats more than enough for my rig (see sig). My 5VSB rail is rated at 2.5A is that good or bad?

to be honest, its only a possibility.

i have assumed thats the problem for me but i cant be sure.

its not worth getting a new psu to try it, and 2.5a is about as much as your gonna find anyway.

it wouldnt help with the hdd's at all however.
