memtest the best way to check faulty memory?

As the tittle says, is memtest the best way to check faulty memory?
Ive never done any memory tests before, and I got myself some 2nd hand memory that I wish to check.
Can someone guide me through it please.. like where to download the programme and what settings to run it. (I read in some threads that its not a windows application?)

Search in google, download, burn it to a cd, set your bios to boot from your cd/dvd drive, run.

there's a few choices there.. which one should i download?

edit: also saw this website http://www.memtest.org/ which has different versions.. im confused which one to get
