Memtest86 results - is the the RAM or motherboard at fault?

Hi everyone

I keep getting BSODs with all sorts of random errors, after a suggestion in another thread I've run Memtest86+ and to be honest I'm not sure what the results mean (only ever run it once before) but I don't remember all that red being there...:eek::(

What is this telling me?

Does the test #5 mean it's been run five times? Or is there a selection of tests that are run through?

There seems to be a huge amount of fails and no passes and it constantly seems - the same test is now at 53mins to be around the 16500-16700MB block...could it be stuck in a loop there?

From the way I read it - which could be completely wrong - it seems like all the RAM is at fault which can't be, which made me wonder if there is an issue with the motherboard.

I'm baffled and stressed as it's my main work machine and I have customers waiting for orders (self employed)...what the hell does this mean and what do I do???:(

Thanks.

My guess is that is the RAM causing a hell of a lot of errors.
How much RAM do you have and what is your spec.

If you have 2 modules of RAM remove one and see if that makes any difference and then swap the modules around. Also try different RAM slots on the motherboard.

On my ye olde Q6600 memtest would throw up errors if I didn't set the RAM to it's proper settings, if I recall rightly the RAM had a profile but it didn't seem to automatically get me what I needed.

Are the RAM modules running at their rated timings/voltage?

Test one stick of ram at a time. (do this by removing the other 3 from the system, then boot from memtest again)

Are all the sticks the same make/speed/voltage?

List the make/model of each stick.

Thanks for the posts guys!

The spec is 32GB in 4x8GB sticks, they are running at stock, nothing has been overclocked.

All the slots have been used.

It's now been going for 1hr 13mins and shows it's on test 7...am I OK to just stop it and start swapping RAM about?

Thanks.

Thanks for the reply bledd., I hadn't seen your post before I posted my last reply.

OK I'll try them one at a time.

They are all the same make and model, I bought them as matched sets from OCUK for a new build a few months back, they are Corsair but I'll have to take them out to check the model.

How will I know when they are faulty, is it just when the memtest screen goes red?

They are Corsair XMS3 CMX16GBx3M2A1600C11 - four of them.

I'm running just the first stick now...so far it's all blue.

How do I tell when it has completely tested the stick and it's passed?

At the top right there is:
Pass %
Test %
Test #

Which one tells me it's completed successfully? I read elsewhere it'll keep going until you stop it manually!

Try and find a website (ocuk if they sell them still) that shows what the voltage should be and the timings. Make sure they're set correctly in the BIOS.

(Sometimes it will say them on the ram sticks)

Pass = % done from all the tests
Test = % done of current test
Test# = the current test.

So when Pass = 100, means it's gone through all of the tests. It will loop round and start again, I can't remember or not if it counts the number of times it's been through all the tests.

ANY red marks = a problem

Ah great thanks.

On the sticks it says...

Voltage - 1.5V
Timings:
Memtest (and I'm sure the bios say) 9-9-9-24 which is what I remember getting.
RAM label - 11-11-11-30

I assume that's the right one...so...what does that tell me?

Not quite sure how to do that...

I've just noticed something else, I'm now testing stick 2 of 4.

I've put it in slot 4 as it's a damn sight easier to get than slot 1 and the timings are showing for this stick in slot 4 as 6-6-6-20.

I'm confused.

In your BIOS, look for the ram setting that lets you select XMP Profile for your ram. If stick 3 is giving you problems, RMA it

I've just checked the RAM using speccy and it says for all of them:

Type DDR3
Size 8192 MBytes
Manufacturer Corsair
Max Bandwidth PC3-10700 (667 MHz)
Part Number CMX8GX3M1A1600C11
SPD Ext. EPP
XMP--2
Frequency
JEDEC #3
Frequency 685.7 MHz
CAS# Latency 9.0
RAS# To CAS# 9
RAS# Precharge 9
tRAS 25
tRC 33
Voltage 1.500 V
JEDEC #2
Frequency 533.3 MHz
CAS# Latency 7.0
RAS# To CAS# 7
RAS# Precharge 7
tRAS 20
tRC 26
Voltage 1.500 V
JEDEC #1
Frequency 457.1 MHz
CAS# Latency 6.0
RAS# To CAS# 6
RAS# Precharge 6
tRAS 17
tRC 22
Voltage 1.500 V

So if I'm reading them right the are reporting the timings correctly.

It's definitely a dodgy RAM stick, it behaved compmletely differently to the others when I tested is in Memtest86+ so it's definitely on it's way back shortly!

Thanks for the help everyone...do I need to do anything with the BIOS now that I've reported the timings or is it all OK?

Thanks again!

What motherboard do you have?

I've only used one 'new' motherboard, mine has a section where I enable 'XMP Profile' instead of fiddling with SPD settings.
