Hey all,

My wifes A180 has gone into limp mode, we took it to a local garage who put it on their computer and it come up with a MAF sensor issue, they replaced it but couldnt get the car out of limp mode due to his computer not being good enough?? luckily he put the old MAF sensor on and said no charge as he couldnt fix the fault saving us £150

Couple of days later we called out a Merc specialist to our home and again for £180 he put it on the computer and it come up with the same thing it being a MAF sensor and for the part plus fitting/ECU reset he wants £640, that seems like madness to me.

So my question is, we know its the MAF sensor is there away to reset the ECU without it needing to go on a special computer to do it?

Cheers in advance.

For fault codes it may be that some need the manufacturer specific diagnostic equipment to reset them. So, the first guy probably had a "general" diagnostic device, and he needed one that could specifically do Mercedes codes. So, it's a software issue.

Maybe an independent Mercedes specialist would have the right equipment and be able to do it more cheaply.
Yea I thought as much, the second guy is a independant Mercedes mobile mechanic so he only deals with mercedes and their parts, I get having a bit of a premium for coming to your house, but over £600 seems crazy for a maf sensor, but at the same time he has the necessary computer to do the ECU side of it.

so the part is £150 - sounds quite cheap ... and the specialist wants an additional £500 for the coding;
did the first garage investigate any potential to 'just' clean it ,or the fault code suggests that would be useless (previously purchased a spray can of IPA to clean mine on a 3 series)
The first garage was £150 in total for the part and fitting plus using the diognastic machine to find the fault, no mention about cleaning it. but with the new part fitted he couldn't get the car out of limp mode so he didn't charge us.

The second guys 'mobile mecanic' charged £180 for the first visit to put it on computer to find the same fault we already knew about and he wants an additional £630 for the part, fitting, and ECU reset.
