I have been offered Merc E=class 2.6L Elegance Xreg for £700.

it will have MOT done before I get it(and pay for it)

anything I should be worried with those cars ?
Ive checked insurance and it is not as high as I would imagine due to engine size.
I was quoted around £1300-1400 - remember that I have no claim bonus.
 
I shall add that it would only be only for weekends, some trips out from London.
rest of the time it would be garaged and making me gain NCB
it has 70k on the clock
 
cheap as people selling it have to sell it easy as they are leaving back to HK.
but when Fox says unreliable, it has to be...need to think it over again ;)

is it really so bad ??? even if this example would be in good condition ?
 
anything else worth looking at up to £1000 ? could use something bigger/spacious...dont say mondeo :) am thinking scenic, v40, octavia ?

Why not a Mondeo? You're willing to look at a V40 lol.

Get a shed to knock around in untill you get some more experience, basically something you won't miss if you put it round a tree (Not saying that you will :p)

I'm a driver for over 13 years:)
Just never owned my own car.
Last car I drove ( 2 weeks back) was d5 v60 :) plenty Horse power under the bonnet:)
Why not Mondeo? Because I'm looking on them as well as they are always mentioned anyway:)
 
If you know the sellers and are confident they aren't selling you a death trap, with 12 months MOT it might not be bad just for weekend use.

Despite what the neigh sayers might tell you, as long as you look after it by warming it up properly you'll have fun in it. Owned mine for 2 years and all it needed was a battery and alternator cause i'd left it sitting for 4 months when I got my new toy :p
 
IF (and thats a big IF!) its a good one, then its a lot of car for £700.

I would far rather a moon mileage e39 5 series though, which strangely, is what I have.

The Merc will rust, the BMW won't, not to mention a BMW 5 of similar vintage is a far better car all round.

Any premium German car of this age is a potential money pit!

I'm a newbie to cars, when you say "warming it up properly" just leave it running for a few mins?
 
Engine wise, Mercedes of this era are good for 200,000+ miles without too much issue.

However I have heard the complete opposite on the electrics side of these Mercs, with many having problems. Still, I'd consider it at that price providing the MOT is done.

Servicing costs can be quite high, and as mentioned previously, check for rust spots.

What's the mileage? Seat wear is a good indicator of "true" mileage.
