Mercedes A Class - thoughts

We have a GLA... Which is a tall A class.......In a word its ****.... Harsh ride, Squeeky interior, Noisy engine (220d) wind noise...
I had a GLA for a courtesy car when mine was in for a service and will confirm everything said here - it's an absolutely dreadful car. Gutless engine (200d) and whilst the interior (which it shares the majority of with an A class) looks ok, it feels awfully cheap.

I'd go for the 1-series all day everyday - and this is coming from the owner of a C Class. The A really brings down the Mercedes brand. It's obviously built to a budget and it shows - even though they're by no means inexpensive cars.

@mattyg

YMMV but thats the last Merc I think we'll ever buy...
I can understand what you're saying if your Mercedes experience has been limited to vehicles on the A class platform. Try anything on the C and E and you'll be much happier, I'm sure.

They're all a step down from the 5, the real choice is a car that my wife doesn't blame me for if anything goes wrong! She has settled on the car and I sorted the price. I've agreed £19.3k with Listers so that's my part done. I'm sure I'll cop some flak here but keep in mind it isn't my car.

Manufacturers need to make a % of their cars recyclable... I guess they dont put that stuff on E and S class to they have to make most of the A class types out of plastic bottles...lol

We actually had a C220d as a courtesy car, and even though it was the same engine it seemed to pull much much better....
But it was 2wd so that may account for some of it....

I am sure if she has made her mind up she'll be happy, try and get them to chuck in at least 2 free services with it. :)

Thanks, the equivalent (ish) model is £25.4k in your link with similar spec albeit a slightly different engine. The budget was always £20k so wouldn't want to stretch above it really. We've agreed the price and the car arrives on Friday.

Thanks for all the input, if there are any issues I will just tell my wife she should have bought a 1 Series and then duck!

Fair warning, if for some reason the car only has Audio 20 CD including Garmin Map Pilot, and not the COMAND Online, it is a complete bag of dog ****. Programming a simple route takes an age, and since there is no Android Auto/Apple Car play support, then you are stuck with it. :)

It has Apple Car play so should be fine. COMAND in the 16+ plates seems to be rare, presumably the screen upgrade negated the need to select COMAND for many buyers.

Pheeew... and I mean that! Without AA/ACP then that Navi systems harks back to the cheap nasty ones from Argos in the early 2k's :D

Why not just lease one for 2-3yrs I’ve been seeing the A200 advertised quite often for a few grand down and £200ish per month with it being an outgoing model. That’s why they are literally everywhere you look at the minute. Seems to have replaced the 1 series for the young chav car of choice.
20k seems far too steep for a 2 year old example

Lease deal was a thought and in fact my neighbour has just taken one out. My wife will probably keep this for 5/6 years and do 7/8k per year. With xenons it was coming in at £1600 down and £3,300 per year and the rest of the spec was lower. Over 6 years it was over £20k to lease.

My mother has just bought pretty much the same spec as in the OP for £18K. Has done 20K miles and for my mother it's perfect.

I would say the interior quality is lower than I'd expected for a Merc but not too bad. Seats are nice, engine is a 4 pot diesel so never going to sound particularly refined.

Due to dieselgate the A200d was an option as they are cheaper than the A200 but her mileage just didn't justify it. I personally think the interior is good but will see soon enough when we live with it. Delivery is Friday.

Well the car arrived today. My wife is very happy and on the whole so was I. Until I began cleaning it.

I've fired off an email with a few pictures to the dealer and will follow up with a call tomorrow. I won't mention it to my wife until I hear back from Mercedes tomorrow to see how they want to play it. A little frustrating, I looked over the bodywork when it was delivered but obviously wasn't on my belly at the time. Looking back over the video they provided I can make out the mark which makes it more frustrating, albeit it was awaiting a valet!

Well the good news is that the dealer has acknowledged it is on them. I have to get a quote to get it repaired and they will fork up.

My neighbour just had a brand new A Class delivered. One day in and the heat shield has fallen off. Or rather it wasn't actually attached....
