Hey all

Long time but I saved bit of money and want to get a beemer or a merc. Now Im getting a used and I have a budget of £12k. I found good ones and they both are under 50k milage.

I am upgrading from a VW gold mk4 and I have no experience with cars apart from my golf.

Can you recommend either of the two? I use a local garage to do my MOT and any repairs (not a fan of dealership garage as they overcharge).

What would you get if you had the choice and was in the market?

Repair bill, maintaince etc is my factor but comfort is no1 factor here.

This will depend which E Class.

The 2002-2009 E Class is about as good as the 5 Series, if not better in some respects (Interior, styling).

The 2009-present E Class is a far better and more modern car than the 5 Series. But as a result its generally more expensive than an E60 so I'd wonder why they were the same price.

The E Class is the better choice I'd imagine though Mercedes aftermarket costs are higher than that of BMW and this strikes me as a low-running-cost driven purchase (Otherwise why bother with the little entry level diesel engines) so something else to bear in mind. Neither car is guaranteed to be a low cost experience.

I pretty much agree with the above, though to be honest I probably prefer the e60 interior style to that of the pre 2009 E class

If you're looking at the 2009 onwards E class then it's a hands down winner for me.

Mercedes charge an absolute fortune for routine work and repairs, though I would say that a car that has been looked after by a well known independent is probably going to be more appealing to future buyers than "just" your local place (who may be perfectly good, but reputation counts).

Ok so that's the W211 which is aligned to the E60 and feels like it's in the right price ball park.

The interior isn't for me but I can kind of see the appeal. Facelift cars are apparently much better on the reliability front than the earlier iterations, but ultimately you need to be prepared for potential bills with either the Merc or BMW

For some reason, the E Class's interior appeals to me. Check this:

This is something that I'd consider but after few years of VW Mk4 repair mindset, I'm worried if this upgrade becomes a jaw dropper in terms of repair costs

£10.5k is top money for a W211 E Class and I'd certainly expect full leather, heated seats and Comand Sat Nav which the above car does not have. You can do better.

If you're concerned about repair costs then spend less on one. You can get a well specced 2007+ E Class for 8-9k and keep some money aside for spares. There's no guarantee that a 2009 car with 50k will be notably more reliable than a 2007 car with 60k. So there's little point in spending a few thousand more to get exactly the same car with just a newer reg.

Drive both and see what you prefer?
Do you need a diesel? If not, go petrol! Much less to go wrong.

E class with half leather? What the heck.
Loads and loads and loads of W211s have half leather. It's ridiculous!

Thanks guys

The idea was to get an E class and upon looking into it further, the 4th gen is what I'll aim for with the face lift. Those headlights on the 3rd gen is horrible lol

Something like this is good I guess: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classif...cars/onesearchad/used,nearlynew,new?logcode=p

I was also looking to wrap the thing in white (since white e classes are more costly than the rest)

This is my 2015 project :D

Thats not a 4th gen facelift, you need a 2013 or newer for that.

Why would you wrap it in white? Do you like the 'bottom of the range company car, wasn't allowed to pick metallic paint' look? :p
