Just come up to my first year of ownership of a new style C-Class and had my first service. I've been told my front tyres are fine but my rear tyres are about to hit the legal limit. In 12,000 miles of driving like an old lady, should the tyres be going this quickly ? Or should I be claiming they aren't fit for purpose ? I'm running the 18 inch run flat wheels.

It's my first brand new car but previous cars have had tyres last years when they have already had usage before my ownership.

How much tread is left?

Dealers often stretch the definition of not much tread depth left on tyres, or not much left on brake bads etc.

Tyres are something which can be changed by anyone without mistakes, so just wait for the tread wear markers to show up. Or measure it yourself if you wish to change it before the legal limit.

well. first check and have a look if they are close to the limit.12k is a bit annoying but fine purpose wise. They probably aren't at the limit, just the merc mechanic knows they will long past when you next check them at 24k!

Swap them for a set of non run flat 17s if you prefer them to last longer

I got 9k out of a set of Fk452's with my e38 7 Series (running 18's) you did well by that yard stick! :p

Considering I use to get over 18k miles out of the rears of my old E350, I think your definition of driving like a granny might be a little wrong.

Got 20k on my set, been on since new, still got 10k in them according to my local Merc dealer. Shame I'll be getting rid of it next month :p
