Hi,

What are peoples thoughts on the E350 CDI?

Been considering ending my Agility (PCP) Plan on my C220 CDI early (6 months left on a 3 year plan) and getting a low milage E350 CDI on a 4 year plan for cheaper than the C220.

Coupe or saloon? I've got the coupe.

Saloon. I was driving a E250CDI last week while mine was being repaired after being rear ended (typical that the car was fixed faster than my neck), and liked the car. But i am curious what the 3L diesel engine is like in real life.

I actually quite like these. the E350 CGI looks like a better car and is very efficient for a lovely smooth V6 petrol but I'd imagine they sell 1 for every 999,999,999 diesels so they basically don't exist, so I guess the CDI is the logical choice.

Most of my journeys are on the motorways.... I've been doing about 500 miles a week for the past 5 months driving down to London (I don't like trains) and a 3,000 mile round trip to Spain a few times a year so a diesel is I think the best option for me. I did read some fantastic reviews on the E350CGI but agree finding one for sale is like winning the lottery.

I like the engine. Plenty of power - the 7g tronic+ gearbox is nice too, although it does occasionally hunt a little. On the motorway I've seen 46mpg on a run. Any specific questions about it?

Fox is right about the rarity of the CGI.

This one has the COMAND with HDD navigation, integrated disc changer, 4GB music register and Digital Media Interface.... I know from the hire car I had that it listed an iPod as a source... is it simply plug it in and you can select your play lists etc from the main display?

Does the Sat Nav do proper UK Postcodes? How good is TMC these days. I've use to a Tomtom which has very good traffic with the live subscription service.

What is the MPG like sat at 70 on the motorway?

I didn't go for COMAND - the ones I saw with it were ~£1500 more than without, and I don't need Satnav. With mine you can plug in an iPod, iPhone etc, and it'll allow you do use the steering wheel or scrolly-wheel to select playlists etc.

I don't think any of the integrated systems are really a patch on a Tomtom I'm afraid - it is nice having it integrated but you'll lose some functionality.

MPG - last run I was on (Stirling to Dundee) I was sat just under 70, and I got 46mpg over the journey. It does seem to drop quite a bit - at 75 it would be closer to 42mpg, at 80 I didn't see more than 39ish etc.

Bear in mind there are 2 versions of the engine depending on MY - one with 232bhp and one with 264(ish). They also have different gearboxes, 7G Tronic or 7G Tronic +, the + gearbox is about 10% more efficient I believe.

This is the 265BHP version ... not sure which version of the gearbox it is.

Its a nice car, my family have had one from new, the interior is not a patch on the BMW F10 but its a nice car if you don't want a BMW....

I would have expected more than 45 from this? Mine is a pre-efficient dynamics car, without the newer style efficient gearbox, which by all accounts is good for 5-10mpg difference, and on my run down to essex on Saturday i got 47mpg door to door sat @ 73mph, including getting stuck in traffic for 45 minutes too! That's on a 5 year old car with 65k on the clock.

Especially with cars like the new 640D giving out figures in the low 50s for COMBINED mpg let alone on long runs, i thought merc wouldnt be too far behind?

*shrugs*

I would be astonished if the 640D got 50mpg combined.

I thought 46mpg was pretty decent given that I had 2 passengers and a couple of cases in the boot. The "bluefficiency" badge on the Merc is nothing to do with being efficient; it is to do with reducing emissions. They also do a BlueTEC version in certain markets which is about 20% LESS efficient but puts out less NO2 or something.
