Ross Brawn is to leave the Mercedes Formula 1 team at the end of this year, with confirmation of his departure expected imminently.

Following months of speculation about whether or not Brawn would stay in his role as team principal for another year, sources have told AUTOSPORT that an immediate handover to the new regime has now been agreed.

Will he go to Williams, McLaren or retire?

Its been known for months that he was leaving - not exactly news any more (until we know for sure what he will be doing)

wouldnt be surprised in the slightest to see him at Ferrari, and conversely would be Very surprised to see him at McLaren (pleasantly surprised, but surprised none the less)

I hope he does stick around for a while longer.

I'd like to see him go to Williams, Sir Frank is obviously looking to take more of a backseat but Claire Williams doesn't seem quite ready to take full control yet... They seem to be making to right moves to change their current fortunes, hiring Brawn would hopefully help towards that too.

Now confirmed.

Ross Brawn reckons that the arrival of new Formula 1 regulations in 2014 meant it was the perfect time for him to step down as team principal at Mercedes.

Following months of speculation about his future, Brawn confirmed on Thursday morning that he is to leave Mercedes and hand over running of the team to its executive directors Toto Wolff and Paddy Lowe.

Rather than feeling that his decision has left Mercedes on the back foot, he thinks that it was better for the outfit's future success that the transition took place now.

"The most important consideration in my decision to step down from the role as team principal was to ensure that the timing was right for the team in order to ensure its future success," said Brawn, who will remain with the team until December 31

Mercedes confident in new F1 team structure after Ross Brawn's exit

If he went to Ferrari what would his role be?
Haven't Ferrari signed James Allison as their new technical director.

Most people are saying FIA because he is staying there until the end of December.

However, just to CT the whole thing up.... :D

Frank has openly offered him a job next year (Teds Notebook)...
Toto has a bunch of Williams shares still...
Mrs Toto is Williams test driver...
Williams has a nice power unit from Merc next year...

So, how's about Merc just want to allow Brawn to have enough information to allow Williams to get the most out of their engine so they can perform well next season and improve the perception of how good the Merc power train is?

He's a highly driven (ba dum tish) individual and loves competition. I can't see the FIA offering that to him. He'll come back as a team principle after a year out fishing in Iceland or something.

Hopefully for Mclaren. Huge blow to Mercedes imo. As Ted Kravitz said, his loss to Mercedes is "one step forwards two steps back".

Said the same when Lewis left McLaren (ba dum tish) ;)

I dunno, I've seen talk that he may take on a role with honda directly as their man-on-the-ground, but who knows.

All I do know, is that we haven't seen the last of him.

Hmm, not so sure on this one. It's been documented that he hated the frequent trips to Japan and working with the difficult Honda management. Of course everything could be on his terms this time, so you never know.

Real shame to see him leave, if I was driving for them I know who I would rather have in control, someone with proven success at multiple teams or a guy called Toto.

While Brawn likes control, he only really had success at Ferrari, Benetton and finally Brawn. I doubt he had any say on the commercial side at Ferrari or Benetton, and he wasn't at Honda long enough to have any real impact commercially (and Nick Fry seemed to deal with it more anyway) before they left him on his arse (though they thankfully funded much of the following year). Really, he's only overseen the transition to Mercedes, and they've plenty of people there to help him on his way.

He's obviously brilliant at leading technical departments, where Paddy Lowe is taking over, but it seems that alone doesn't interest him any longer.

It's odd how many ex-drivers and technical staff have become involved in the political or commercial sides of motorsport, the most successful being that young driver Bernie Ecclestone. It's not something where you'd expect an awful lot of crossovers.

When Hamilton left McLaren there was a lot of rumour suggesting Brawn had been the key influencer in persuading Lewis to move.

If that's true and he wasn't aware of Brawn's impending departure I expect he'd be pretty peeved.

Unless having Paddy Lowe at Mercedes is enough for Hamilton…
