Mercedes Problem.

maybe someing is up , and its gone into a 'fail safe' mode , im sure bmw have a similar thing so it lets u 'limp' home safely , is ther any warning lights showing on the dash
?

No warning dash, it's really strange. I thought maybe something about an air flow meter? It's like the turbo doesn't work and it just about gets going :S

Any strange noises or other indications.
Maybe a pipe off but more likely to have dropped into safe mode.

My mothers A class did the same a while back but the lights on the dash came one like blackpool illuminations.

Turned out it was a £7 brake switch causing me all these problems.

If its in failsafe mode an engine light would come on for deffo.

Yeah will take it. I also forgot to mention it's a Tiptronic. I was driving had it in 5th, was doing around 60 and I thought I'll drop it into 4th, revs went to around 3000 had full foot flat on throttle. No go. I then thought ok, lets drop it into 3rd, and then there was no action going on what so ever. It was like the car had gone into neutrel, put it back into 4th and then it was all merry. Could it be a clutch problem?

My father used to own a 51 place C220 CDI and it exhibited the exact same problem. Turned out to be the catalytic converter. It had perished to some extent meaning the car entered it's 'limp home' mode. About £700 to replace. :O

Another vote for the CAT here too, dads went and blocked the exhaust off causing loads of backpressure, just about made 30Mph. Stupid mechanic blew the head gasket trying to "diagnose" the problem and the cars never been the same since it was fixed, runs like a heap. Get it booked in and sorted ASAP before you cause some damage.
