Anyone on here in the merchant navy or know anyone who is? Currently considering joining as a deck officer cadet. Good pay, get to see the world etc. Obviously will be away from home a lot but that doesn't bother me too much.

So if anyone on here does this or knows anyone who does, do you have any advice? What marine college did you go to and who's best in terms of sponsoring companies? What's it really like?

My friend goes to the naughtical college in glasgow. He seems to like it and says the cruise ships are popular sponsors. I cant remember exactly, but in his application he had to list a number of companies he would like to get sponsored by and he made the mistake of putting some dutch (I think) company and as soon as the college saw it they just put him with them because they always take people and it saves them the hassle of applying to the other companies...

Got friends in the Nautical College in Glasgow, and my mum used to work there. They all enjoy it, though do say it's quite hard work & you have to wonder about in a blazer and tie for some sponsors which irks some people.

Got a friend who went through it a few years ago and is always about on the boats, he's a great chap. Very down to earth and mature, though as offensive as the stereotypical seaman is...

If you have any specific questions, I can speak to my friend and get them answered.
One thing though, don't stay in the catered halls in Glasgow as they are dire.
