Mercury Prize 2010

I don't get the weird Biffy Clyro cult, it seems you can't just like their music, but rather you have to have some odd deep connection with the band. For that reason, I'm out.

You do realise, most people who enjoy the band in that way aren't part of a 'cult', but have just been fans for a very long time? Biffy didn't suddenly appear over night. I personally first discovered them on MTV2 about 6-7 years ago now. How is following a band you enjoy's work any different from anything else in life?

It isn't about having a deep connection with anything other than the music. If the music speaks to you, it does so at a deeper level.

What I explained earlier is simply another layer of context I stumbled across and made me appreciate the music all the more sincerely. I dare you to listen to Folding Stars knowing that it's about the death of his mother and not feel some shared emotion. The music may be about introspective feeling, but it speaks to many because it's not a unique situation; the emotion of grief for example, is universal.

I know what you mean. I don't think I know anyone who just 'likes' Biffy.

I enjoy and like them. I'm not obsessed. My old flatmate is the same; he enjoys and likes them but that's where it ends. I don't know anyone who's obsessed with them personally. I guess it comes down to maturity though. It doesn't matter which band or decade we're in, there will always be teenagers who suddenly think some obscure band has found the secret to love, life and everything. Don't confuse fans with idiots.

The XX won.

What a farce. Completely over-rated.

Sigh No More and Only Revolutions wipe the floor with them.

The same could be said for Sigh No More though. It sounds a little false and lacks the sincerity I associate with folk - it's almost as if M&S were formed in a cynical move to capitalise on the wave that Fleet Foxes created. They make for quite a show live though, so perhaps I'm looking for something that isn't there.

Only Revolutions has a few stand out tracks, but as an album it didn't work as well as Puzzle or Infinity Land. But since I'm quite a fan of Biffy Clyro I would've been happy had they won.

Have to be honest, nothing has been as good as Blackened Sky or The Vertigo of Bliss from Biffy.

Not a fan of the new stuff.

Wild Beasts/Foals/Weller would have had my vote, not a fan of The xx.

I love the XX's album, but it's a bit too "clinical" to be award winning IMO. Should have been Wild Beasts in my opinion, with I Am Kloot, the XX, and Mumford and Sons all close behind.

Great lineup this year though - XX, Sigh No More, Only Revolutions, Northern Skies, Two Dancers, and Total Life Forever have pretty much been my "staple diet" of albums this year, so chuffed to see them all nominated. It's a shame that Field Music weren't, but you can't have everything!
