I don't get the weird Biffy Clyro cult, it seems you can't just like their music, but rather you have to have some odd deep connection with the band. For that reason, I'm out.
You do realise, most people who enjoy the band in that way aren't part of a 'cult', but have just been fans for a very long time? Biffy didn't suddenly appear over night. I personally first discovered them on MTV2 about 6-7 years ago now. How is following a band you enjoy's work any different from anything else in life?
It isn't about having a deep connection with anything other than the music. If the music speaks to you, it does so at a deeper level.
What I explained earlier is simply another layer of context I stumbled across and made me appreciate the music all the more sincerely. I dare you to listen to Folding Stars knowing that it's about the death of his mother and not feel some shared emotion. The music may be about introspective feeling, but it speaks to many because it's not a unique situation; the emotion of grief for example, is universal.
I know what you mean. I don't think I know anyone who just 'likes' Biffy.
I enjoy and like them. I'm not obsessed. My old flatmate is the same; he enjoys and likes them but that's where it ends. I don't know anyone who's obsessed with them personally. I guess it comes down to maturity though. It doesn't matter which band or decade we're in, there will always be teenagers who suddenly think some obscure band has found the secret to love, life and everything. Don't confuse fans with idiots.
