I had to replace an old meridian unit and got something off the bay... can't get it to work. Is anyone familiar with these phones?

It seems to be able to support either an RJ-45 or an RJ-11 input - I connected the RJ-11 cable from the old phone and didn't get anything. If the RJ-45 is the only way to get it to run, how do I interface that with my system - does anyone have the wiring specs?

Have I made a gross error and the M3310 is not actually compatible with my exchange system?

Your in luck. I work for BT selling phone systems so I should be able to help! What system have you actually got, you mentioned replacing a Meridian with "something off the bay", what is the something??

Sorry, I've reread what I posted and I was as clear as mud. I didn't replace the phone system, just a terminal/hand set.

The phone system I have is a Norstar central control unit N7TB03AA-93. I had an old meridian handset (m7324) which died. I replaced it with a M3310.

My main questions are:

-Will that handset work with my exchange?

-It has 4 inputs in the base:

.|.|.|. - an RJ45 port

a telephone symbol where the actual handset plugs into the M3310 unit

an RJ11 style (but smaller) headset input

and an actual RJ-11 socket for where the unit presumably plugs into the original socket

Should I be able to plug the RJ-11 telephone line in and ignore the RJ-45 or have I opened a complex and terrifying can of worms?

Hah, no you havent opened up a can of worms but you do have a problem. I'm not 100% sure which system you have as N7TB03AA-93 is a serial number not a model number, but I suspect its a Norstar Compact or Compact Plus (or possibly a Modular). The handset you have bought (M3310) can only be used with a Meridian Option system.

Assuming the system you have is a Compact/Compact Plus (or Modular) you need another M7324 or the smaller M7208 or M7100 or the updated versions T7100, T7208 and T7316. The last 2 digits of the model number represent how many programable buttons are available i.e the M7324 has 24.

Sorry its not better news but I hope that helps.

Hmm, how do I find out what the model number is? There is one sticker on it and none of the various numbers on it looks particularily helpful.

The best that I can say is that it is about 1.2m x 0.6m and handles six external lines with 24 internal ones. Luckily I didn't spend too much money on it.

I might be able to track it down from the part number but the 1 you listed (N7TB03AA-93) cant be correct as all Norstar part numbers start NT, can you double check it?

Another idea, does it look like any of the systems pictured in this LINK

Right, that sounds right and explains why the handset you bought doesnt work. As per my earlier post, you will need a handset with a model number that starts with either M7 or T7 (M7324, M7208, T7316, T7208 etc). The more recent versions are the models starting T7. You should be able to find plenty of these on the Bay or just by Googleing. The M3310 you have now is only compatible with a Meridian Option system and definately wont work with what you have.

Hope that helps.
