Messaging over a small network

What type of messaging, and what type of small network? LAN in a single building? Windows has messaging built in for LAN use, and you can also just use WLM/MSN?

What type of messaging as previously asked. Winchat is still alive and kicking. :D
There was a comic chat with poseable characters - cant remember what that was called.

That was Microsoft Comic Chat, it was basically an IRC client that added metadata to all the messages in order to portray the emotions, this was one of the reasons it never really caught on.

Ah yes. It was pretty good fun and shame it didnt replace emoticons, it almost wrote a good comic book after an hour or so. I recall offices used to then try and ban winchat and winpopup as it was rampant back in the day.

You made me go and install MS Comic Chat :P grrr! I shall be playing around with it for ages now, it's let me rediscover IRC... with comic characters!

In my old school me and the other teccies/network manager used Exodus IM to keep in touch as well as email. it took very little setting up and worked pretty well
