Hello, was spose to format a sdcard instead i pressed format on my second disk drive which has all my important files on!

I pressed quick format and pressed start but within 1-2 seconds i saw my mistake and pressed cancel but now it wont let me use the drive, says its not formatted. arghhh!!

What can I do, XPSP2 NTFS partition.

Don't trust me on this, But if you do a quick format it will show up in windows and then you can use a tool like recuva to get all the files back. Quick format shouldn't actually overwrite anything.

As I say, don't trust me 100% on this. There are probably tools to read the drive though.

^^ TestDisk is the daddy here ;)

ps; don't feel bad about doing what you did. M$ shouldn't make it so easy to wipe a drive.

Tried testdisk it said the partition was too damaged to be restored/read :( but I think I can get most of my files back im running archive undelete it's finding my files from the looks of it.

I've lost some old classic games from the looks of it and ill have to redownload mass effect 2..

If these files are important you should invest in a backup solution big external drives are cheap and it's amazing how much less stressfull this situation would have been had you known you had a decent backup in the draw.

Just restore them from your backup drive.

2003 member must have a backup in place?

Every time you buy a hard drive, buy a second one of the same size, to act as a backup.

If you don't have one

Testdisk
Recuva
GetDataBack (not freeware)

lol what? Imagine if you had to go through a 10 step process to format a drive? Would that make it better? Surely user error is to blaim here - it's not Microsofts fault that the wrong drive was chosen. Surely you should be double checking yourself before hitting the format button.

I'd give Recuva a go.

I found getdataback to be the best I have used.
I tried recuva in the past and it doesnt find files like getdataback does.

This was my backup drive but due to only having 2 drives (120 and 200) I was running out of space so began to put more and more stuff on the backup drive and it started becoming a normal drive..

I had BSG episodes n other films, 10gb of music, wedding pictures and films, old games that I used to play back in the days and some new games.

Altogether around 140GB of data.

Luckily my windows install was on the other drive.

As for windows being at fault well I think it should have a bigger warning covering half the screen when formatting but I might have still pressed yes anyway as I was in such a rush so cant blame them.

Anyway lesson learnt, I can redownload the new Games, got wedding stuff on dvds. I think ill loose some pictures, some episodes/films, old games and maybe the music.

Not too bothered bout films and old games but the music, arghh!!

Bit ****ed off with the software not being able to recover the partitions as it was literally 1 second after I pressed format (quickformat) that I pressed stop.
