Messenger/Skype alternatives?

Is Messenger defunct now or what? I am currently an unhappy user of Skype (not a patch on messenger imo) and have found this today. Looks like the desktop version of Skype will either stop being supported, or will be withdrawn? Not sure exactly what that means. Are there any good alternatives? I like dynamic file sharing - particularly photos. Messenger was very good at that. skype not so.

It's the old desktop API for third party developers, the Windows desktop app itself is unaffected.
