Meta Quest 3s

While the Q3s might be a more affordable option for first time adopters, many VR enthusiasts will have already picked up a Q3 and I'm not sure the specs of the 3s are that much better than the Q2 for Q2 owners to make the jump.
Having said all that, if a large percentage of Q2s have been borked by the latest V66 update (conspiracy theory tinfoil hats at the ready) then Q2 owners may go for the Q3s.

How many vr SIM racers are there, that would buy the product, that would make it worth developing and manufacturing an entire line of devices?

They wouldn't have to manufacture an entire line of devices.. even just enabling displayport over USB as there is already a USB port... would do it..

Some simmers may even then... having got the device.. use it standalone.. and possibly even use the Meta store..

I doubt it would take much to add in the ability.. but they like all big companies are trying to tie people into their own store and nothing else.. in fact i'm always amazed they even allow PCVR over it.. but having alowed PCVR i really can't see why enabling the USB port to support direct video is such a big no for them..

If it's as simple as enabling the display port ability, I completely agree.

I have to assume it's not that simple though. Since as you say, they already allow pcvr (including non meta store).

It's a wierd one usb-c supports displayport over usb.. I suppose it is possible that there is some sort of hardware requirement that the quest is missing, but I would have thought to add it wouldn't have added much cost if any..

Just seems a strange decision..

Trying to do some research into it. Pico 3 neo link seems to have used a straight up display port rather than using the same usbc port it has for charging, may suggest there's issues?

Do any headsets use it? Could it be a limitation of display port over usb c that doesn't suit the extra requirements of vr (2 displays, high refresh at high resolution etc).

Plenty of laptops support displayport over usb-c as well as charging.. but again unsure if it needs a special usb-c port, or some additional hardware in the machine itself..

As far as I can tell displayport over usb-c easily supports the resolution and two displays..

But if there is a hardware requirement, which there probably is .. then we won't be getting direct screen connection from meta anytime soon .. just a shame.. given they could have added it..

Quite why they dont make a DisplayPort version for just sim racers / flight simmers is beyond me?

Not all USB-C ports support DP ALT Mode which is what is needed to use display port. It's extra hardware. Which means extra expense. And it would also mean extra support needed. And as Unseul says above, the number of people using PCVR headsets is tiny, it's just simply not worth their time or effort.

also apther thing to go wrong.
an extra £2 per headset as example has big implications over all. dont forget meta arent making money on the headsets last i hear.
