Meta tags

Is there any point in adding meta tags to my site to increase my cover by search engines?

I was going to add some but then remembered most of the big search engines don't really use them any more.

Add them. As long as they are used as they're meant to be everybody is happy. A lot of engines still use them. It can't hurt to add them, as long as you don't abuse them.
