A new album is due out in April, accompanied by a tour:

There’s also a new song, ‘Lux Aeterna’:

So, that’s all fun!

As for the song itself, I have mixed feelings. It hits the spot for the delivery of ‘loud guitar and drums’ that I associate with Metallica. I will have to listen to it through better speakers later this week to comment on production, but initial impression is that it sounds OK (i.e. not bad).

I also associate the song with the coming of additional new material and a tour, so that helps colour my impressions positively.

Otherwise, it’s a little lacking for me personally. Because of its arrangement and lyrics, it’s just not a particularly layered song. What you hear at first instance is sort of all you get.

My favourite Metallica songs tend to have more attitude, a more ominous sound, or more ominous lyrical content. The Justice album is my favourite by quite some way. Compared to that, this is very much like the NWOBHM influences that others have cited. I’ve never really dug that style, personally, as it’s just a little too reliant on the ‘guitar and drums sound’ to carry the whole song. This ‘straight up’ approach can be good, but without the support of more tracks to dive into, it can feel a bit ‘one note’ or ‘basic’.

I’m not sure I’d go quite that far in respect of this new Metallica song, but generally I like something a bit more sophisticated to wrap my mind and ears around, musically and/or lyrically.

Because of the mild overlap with lyrical themes, I can’t help but compare ‘Lux Aeterna’ to ‘Pulse of the Maggots’ by Slipknot. They both have relatively short, pop-informed song structures (i.e. neither are epic progress sprawls), but my god…. there is just so much more going on in ‘Pulse of the Maggots’; that song really has a sense ‘musical determination’, … beyond ‘loud drums and guitar’. It’s therefore much more interesting to me. Listen to both songs back to back and I think you might get what I mean…

In summary, I think Lux Aeterna sounds OK but I’m hoping its impact will be bolstered in the context of a more ‘crafted’ album.

Looking forward to hearing more and for the upcoming tour!

I'm a fan, but I agree with you, it does seem a bit...by the numbers. Safe.
Looking forward to the album, which I'd imagine has some more interesting/diverse tracks. If they do another stadium tour in Europe after it I'll definitely go - saw them in 2019, absolutely phenomenal performance.

Tour dates are out for 2023/24, presale tomorrow. See my link.

No stadiums in the UK I’m afraid.

Well this is now out!

The singles were all so-so but the album as a whole is a little more dissonant and dark than those singles suggested. In fact, I think it gives some contrast that helps those singles pop.

Have had a couple of listens and like what I hear - pleasantly surprised

I do wish it were more like their much earlier stuff, this is a bit too heavy imho

Their triple consecutive albums of Ride, Master & Justice are where, for me at least, Metallica peaked musically. The very negative fan reaction to the songs on Load/ReLoad (which I think are two of the best produced/sounding metal albums of all time even if I dislike the songs), caused Metallica to mentally breakdown, eventually leading to Jason leaving and the whole "Some Kind of Monster" band/album collapse issues and, for me, as much as I love Rob, I just don't think they've ever recovered as a Band "musically".

Nowadays to me they sound like a parody of their earlier selves, trying to recapture the sound of their thrashy youth by pumping out identical sounding thrash album after thrash album and long gone is that Ride, Master, Justice musicality which lifted them way above all the other Thrash bands of the era.

Thats just my opinion though.

While I agree regarding the best albums and the overall sentiment I still enjoy most of their output since (aside from Lulu and St. Anger, though the latter had some good riffs).

I wasn't enthused with the tracks I've heard from the album so far but I'll still get it, I'm sure there'll be tracks I'll like.

Just had it on again, it's awesome, obviously not as good as Ride, Master and Justice but not far off.
Mind you I've got amazing audio equipment and even Coldplay sound good on it.
Next one I'm waiting for is the new Skindred album.

Listened to it a few times and found it to be an absolute slog, but I’ve not been a fan of their last few albums, so probably not the audience they’re looking for any more.

Been listening to this while travelling to and from work.
At first, I thought it was a decent, solid effort but wasn't knocking my socks off. The more I listen to it though, the more I'm enjoying it.
For me, better than Death Magnetic and Hardwired.
First CD I've bought in over a decade :D

I've been able to listen to this 3 or 4 times so far. IMO the first half is good, however it just seems to run out of steam as it gets towards the last few tracks.
Probably better than Hardwired, but I don't think it's as good as Death Magnetic.

It's their second best album from the last 30 years (ie. post-Black Album), but not really sure what that says most about the Album or Metallica...

After a few listens these are my favourites:

Shadows Follow
Chasing Light
Too Far Gone?
If Darkness Had A Son
You Must Burn (for the super break down riff sections - chorus is a little flat for me)

Great riffs in all of these.
