Hello,

so a lot like many UK households I’m doing my meter readings. I haven’t long moved into the house and this is the first time I’ve done a meter reading. Little bit confused as to the reading itself. My energy supplier has estimated my usage at 07604.00 but the meter is showing 015930.05 seems to be a huge difference!

The property has solar panels also and I just can’t understand why It seems to be such a huge difference. I assume I’ll be better off sending the reading off tonight and paying the old rate?

The total on the meter shows the total usage since that meter was installed, it's not the total you've used (unless you happened to get a new meter installed the day you moved in).

Presumably, the meter was reading around 08326 when you moved in and you've used 07604 in that time meaning the meter now reads 15930

I did wonder if it was the total amount. As we’ve not had a new meter installed since being here. I’m guessing I have no but choice to send the number that’s on the meter as I don’t know how else to find out what has actually been used.

3 months. Stupidly never took any when first moved in, didn’t even cross my mind and The setting up of the energy bills was left in my wife’s hands, wasn’t until today I looked at the account and saw they’ve been requesting meter readings for the last couple of months

Isnt that the FIT meter for the solar panels? Considering it says photovoltaic system on the meter and that meter serial number doesn't conform to the usual format for import meter serial numbers.

@BigBoy is a trained meter tech i believe and might be able to confirm or not

Do you have pics of any other meters at the property @lta2001

So I could potentially be looking at the wrong meter? The only other meter I’ve found is the gas meter which is just a touch over the estimate of the energy supplier.

If you don't have evidence of near day 1 you'll probably be paying the estimate.

But yes the current value isn't your usage its the usage since the meter has been in.

What is the reading your energy company have estimated?
Not the usage but the reading.
I hope for your sake that 7000 is USAGE and not the READING they are estimating!

There's going to be a lot of tears today from people who've been paying waaay under their usage for possibly years

It’s saying estimated reading their end but I must be looking at the wrong meter or something because to me it just seems so far out!

The meter won't have been at zero when you moved in. It's like the odometer on a used car.

You'll pay for the units consumed since you moved in. The supplier will have a record (or they can get industry figures) for the starting value. It might not be 100% accurate, but is unlikely to be too far off.

For future, always note starting meter reading when you move in.

If that's the reading and not your usage.. You need to address this ASAP. Absolutely sure you have no pics of it when you moved in?

No
Pictures of it when we moved in. What are your thoughts? Whoever lived here prior have been underpaying and now we are going to pay the price?

It's certainly possible.
If they provided a meter read waaay under the correct read this would be the result.

If your usage is massively different they may ask you to prove it by taking readings a week apart and use that to estimate back. I've had to do this before. But in my case there was no loss to my supplier.

I'd do this anyway. Take a read next week and see what your rough daily rate is.

Check your paperwork the seller often takes a reading too to avoid you billing them.
