Hi all,

We are travelling to mexico where I believe the mains voltage is 110/120v.

The mrs would like to take her hair straighteners but they are rated 240v. We have a hair dryer which is 120v/240v....am I correct in thinking that the hair dryer will work but the straighteners won't?

Thanks.

Thanks... she won't be happy lol. Is there anything I can buy which will step up the voltage? Oh and from the high street as we are going on Tuesday lol.

There is little you can do, if the device is 240v only then it wont work there. Check the specification carefully though, so many electronic devices will operate on 100-250v ranges these days as they are marketed world wide. My o/h's straighteners state 110-230 for example and travel with her to the states without issue regularly. (GHD brand).

Just assumed because there is heat involved they'd need quite a bit of power.

Check the fuse in the plug that comes with it and that will be the maximum current draw - multiply that by 240v and you'll get the maximum power usage in Watts under normal usage.

No it doesn't,
the fuse is there primarily to protect the cable, it is very little to do with the product attached.

Hair straighteners have an internal thermal fuse to protect the element.
They will work, just won't get as hot. IF they are ghd V's they will be fine.
Don't count on it, some straighteners do not work on a lower voltage (kinda counter intuitive given that it is just a resistive element, but there you go).

If they were GHD the OP would have said :) Just like I'm posting this from an iPad :D

Awkwardly you can get 240v in Mexico as they wire up two phases for stuff like washing machines.
Don't count on it being available in your hotel though

Hers are 58w

58W doesnt sound right at all, my o/h's are 300W. While i can appreciate this will vary brand to brand, i cant imagine that 2 devices with an identical aim (to heat hot ceramic plates) could vary so wildly?
