MGS1 controls really haven't aged well

I picked up the MGS HD Collection the other day, and thought I owed it to the series to grab the original MGS and play through it in order.

I've got to admit, I've now ditched the first game and moved right on to MGS2.

Purely using a 4 button d-pad as a control unit as not aged well in any shape or form for a game like this. A significant number of the challenges seem to be predicated on how awkward the controls in terms of precision, and in my mind that just doesn't cut it in terms of a modern gameplay experience.

It got me thinking though, are there any other games that were classics in their time, but have since obtained significant shortcomings in terms of modern gaming expectations?

(Don't get me wrong, I'm not for one minute suggesting it wasn't a superb game in its time).
 
could say resident evil 1, 2 etc.

very clunky controls but i think that added to tension.

that sort of gameplay wouldn't "cut it" nowa days so what we've got now is an action game littered with QTE's.

I played through them all recently, and whilst I loved MGS as much as ever, when it came to playing MGS2 I was mostly thinking 'wow...I used to love this?:eek:' The script and general story is absolutely appalling, and my loathing of Raiden increased to new heights....he is constantly surprised by every single word everyone says!

Not sure what you mean, MGS uses the analogue sticks. Controls do still feel a bit clunky but I last played it when the HD Collection came out and still thoroughly enjoyed it.
 
MGS1 had the best story with the least amount of weirdness, MGS2 was just a fever dream, MGS3 was epic and MGS4 tried to be epic and a fever dream at the same time. MGS5 has Keither Sutherland.

MGS (first one) isn't in the hd collection, and only supports the d pad.
 
He just means he replayed it at the same time as the HD Collection and it does support analogue sticks, the actual movements of Snake aren't analogue though, it's full speed or nothing.

Indeed. Still my favourite of the lot though I think, really love the amount of optional and incidental codec conversations in it (and MGS3), with every playthrough I come across more stuff that I haven't heard or experienced before.

That was the main disappointment for me in MGS4 really, the codec was barely used and instead they relied on the longer cutscenes (which I didn't mind personally) to provide the extra detail.
 
When I think of MGS1, I always think of how vibration was used in the boss fight against Psycho Mantis.

How would that battle work now if you replay it on the PS3, as one of the parts required you to plug the controller into port two, and you can't really do that with the PS3 controller?
