All the news about MGS 5 has made me keen to get involved, as I loved the first game on the Playstation. But other than playing most of MGS1 and a bit of of MGS2 when I rented it, I've not played any of the others.

Is there anything I need to catch up on before grabbing Ground Zeros? And where's the cheapest place to get GZ on PS3?

Is there stuff in them I need to know? I can't remember the details of 1 and didn't play much of 2. Does 5 not stand alone without needing to know the back story?

This is the chronological order of the games story.

1.) Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (1964)
2.) Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops (1970)
3.) Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker (1974)
4.) Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes (?)
5.) Metal Gear Solid 5 (?)
6.) Metal Gear (1995)
7.) Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (1999)
8.) Metal Gear Solid (2005)
9.) Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (2007- 2009)
10.) Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of The Patriots (2014)
11.) Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance (2018)

The first 5 being Big Boss, and the newer ones being Solid Snake.

Wow. Never realised it was all over the place like that.

Makes me think its pointless playing a few of them unless I play all, and I'm not going to do that.

Loads to catch up on - though I think MGS5 follows on from Peacewalker

Honestly one of the few franchises that is worth playing through - just about to finish my MGS1 playthrough primarily to get through all of them before MGS5

Wow you never played it through before? It's amazing, I remember buying it for the PS1 when it was first released on two discs, and cover art of the case was simply gorgeous as well.

So many hidden things in the game and easter eggs to look for, Hideo Kojima is a genius.

Play them in order of release, not chronologically.

You should play through them all (and 1 again) to really fully enjoy 5, also the fact its one of the GOAT game series

Replaying most of them :) (not played Peacewalker and didnt get far in 3/4) - which is why I said its worth playing them before MGS5 - if TLoU is the Citizen Kane of games then MGS is the Godfather trilogy ;)...

Its called a PS3 and the MGS HD collection + MGS1 and MGS4 - Portable Ops from what Im told isnt that important, not sure about the 2 MGs though...

I'm not going to buy a PS1, PS2, PSP (and a Vita?) just to play an MGS 5 prequel :p

Ive only played MGS 1, 2, & 4 - i missed 3 and the others that were released inbetween MGS 2 & 4.

I didnt realy like MGS 4, i prefered 1&2 - but as ps3ud0 mentioned you can get the HD collection.

They are quite often on sale on the PSN store, i think the colletion was also done as a retail disc aswell.

I know I can, but do I have to play the others before 5? Is there any uber required story threadline that I need to know otherwise 5 won't make sense, or are the recommendations more because they are good games?

I'm sure if you looked hard enough you could fine play through's on Youtube if you do not want to play through them all.
