My gf has to go to a conference in May this year in Fort Lauderdale and we thought it would be a decent idea to team it up with a nice holiday for us both. Problem is, I'm not a massive beach bum, so I want to know if anyone that has been there and been amused enough by other stuff in this area or is it best to head to the orlando way?

Alternatively, we could travel to maybe cancun or somewhere else? We have approximately 2 weeks available (dont have to use all that up, haven't booked flights yet). Just for info, I'm 25 and she's 24, so no oldie boring stuff ;)

Cheers all

Miami art deco achitecture is really nice if you like that sort of thing, there are a few sites to see and things to do. We spent a few days there. You can easily spend the day just walking around the city and taking it all in. Heavy Cuban and South American culture in some areas. However I'm not sure there would be enough to satisfy you for two weeks without a good few days by a beach/pool. We were only there for a few days before our flight home.

IIRC things like the Everglades aren't too far away, and neither is Florida Keys which are nice too. Quite a lot of wildlife in the area.

Watch out for the Jamaican hookers, and visit Las Olas Blvd. Very pretty area.
While you're in Miami, *definitely* get some Cuban food (even if it's just a sandwich). Great stuff (and lots of native Cubans in Miami, so it's the real stuff). David's or Lincoln Road Cafe is the place to be.
If you get a chance, check out Tantra's - it's not a family joint Indian porn projected on the walls, Hookahs at the tables, real grass on the floor - _it_is_nuts_.
Also check out the Delano, it has some killer art-deco design, and the lobby/pool area is pretty amazing. Another super pricey location, but the experience is pretty incredible.

Great, sometimes breathtaking scenery and a swift police department. Not so great natives.

Only spent a day to be fair driving through downtown and around Ocean Drive then had a really nice walk despite being rather aware of my surroundings every second I was there.

Probably just my experience though ;)
