Hi all, sorry If this is the wrong area to post in but I thought it was kind of audio related.
I'm on the hunt for a mic as I am starting to do a few videos for youtube. I am filming on my iPhone 7 and have been looking at maybe a shotgun mic or Lav mic? not too sure which would be a better option. I think a lav mic would be better as it means I can have it on my top and capture the best audio but shotgun looks like a good option for portability?

The shotgun mic has the advantage that you can leave it out of shot and move around more without getting noise from things brushing the lav mic. Obvious disadvantage with the shotgun mic is that they tend to have a tighter pickup pattern meaning you need to talk directly at the mic and cannot turn away from it and expect it to still pickup your voice. The one advantage of the tighter pickup pattern is that you get less stray noises picked up, which can be a big problem with omni directional mics like most lavaliers. Also note that unless you get a wireless radio for the lav mic, you will be tethered to the recording device by the cable.

All makes sense to me! I’m very tempted by the RØDE shotgun mics but will need to check compatibility with my phone

I've made a decision.
I have a spare iphone 4 so will be using that with a lav mic on me and then sync the audio and video. I also think it will offer me more versatility.
