mice everywhere in house

hello, i live in 3-storey house and there have been many mice running around the place for a long time now, even on the kitchen worktops and in bedrooms, at night i can hear them moving around and scratching stuff etc.

The council has been to put some special poison which didn't work and i have tried various rat traps etc of different sizes and baits but to no avail. I will have to call Rentokil soon i think but if anyone has any suggestion as to how to get rid of them quick and easy i would be grateful.

I have a back yard and garage but the doors of the house are kept closed during the day and I am not sure how they are getting in.

When I go to the kitchen at night, around 3 am to get water to drink, it is not a pretty site: as I enter the kitchen one mouse runs from behind the toaster, towards kettle, then runs towards fridge, where he jumps off the worktop and hides into a whole behind the fitted units. I also see one during the day jump onto the dishwasher and then hide behind the dishwasher.

i burst out laughing when i say the replies "get a cat" and "get a rat" thanks for cheering me up i have been down in the dumps sharing my home with so many flippin' mice. One of the problems is the house is old and very big, it's on the corner, and I also have a basement which is only used for storage. My brother-in-law has been buying a special kind of bait from B+Q store and smaller traps but nothing's working. I sometimes don't even feel like eating at home, and sometimes, before entering the kitchen at night, I knock on the door to alert the mice so that they will get lost before I enter. No joke!

The reason I can't get a cat is that I live with my brother who has a lovely staffordshire bull terrier called Leo who I don't think would tolerate a cat around. Mind you, the dog barks when he sees the mice. Can dogs and cats live peacefully together? It wouldn't be a problem getting a cat, as I live very near to Battersea Dogs Home.

thanks, will make enquiries about compatability of dog and cat with the dogs home. Battersea dogs home also have a cat section.

we tried peanut butter on the traps and nutella but it doesnt work, one problem is that the mice are incredibly small.

does the fact that i have a plague of mice mean that i haven't been giving enough attention to cleaning and hygiene in the house? does having a dog cause more mice? if my mother-in-law decides to pay me a visit, it might persuade the mice to jump into the mouse traps and committ suicide.......(les dawson joke)!
