I've arrived at that painful moment when I need to replace all 4 summer tyres on the car. Currently running CCS3's which have lasted well (Over 20K miles on the rears and 30K miles on the fronts) but they are down to about 2.5mm so it is time to replace them.

Car is running 265/35/R18's on the rear and 245/40/R18's on the front. My preference would have been to replace the CCS3's with 5's put these are not available for my rears. So I guess the choice is either Michelin Pilot Sport 3's or Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2's.

The car won't be doing any track days. 80% of my driving is up and down motorways. Looking for something which have good grip (especially in the wet), low noise and when I'm spending about £700, tyres which will last as well as the CCS3's. Any improvement in rolling resistance would be a bonus.

So what do people recommend? Michelin Pilot Sport 3 or Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2?

noise and driving wise I can't really tell a difference.
Mileage I can't tell you yet as I have only had the Goodyears on for a few months.

I know the Goodyears were about £30 a corner cheaper though :)

Im going through the same process, similar tyre decision. I have Pilot Supersports, lasted 30K on my 530D but too noisy. Still cant decide about which to go with, but minded to go Goodyear as they are softer in the main.

Not sure how stiff I need the tyres to be honest ... these are to go on a E350CDI ... not a car known for 'b' road blasts due to the size.

The Goodyears are working out at about £90 a set cheaper but with the Michelin's you get a £70 fuel card ... so in real terms only a £20 difference.

Hi there

Probably not suitable for either of you due to noise and economy being a request, but the Yokohama V105 is supposed to be the new wet handling kind with none of the drawbacks of the F1AS2 when it also comes to try dry handling. Very sporty tyre with superb performance but let down by poor economy figures which I'd imagine also means it is not quiet.

I'd say for motorway driving in a 5 series where comfort is important the F1AS2 seems the perfect choice.

Just picked the F1AS2 over the PS3 for my fronts, will be getting them fitted this week but haven't got much of a frame of reference between the two unfortunately. I do have the PS3 on the rear but the front will be replacing Ultrac Sessantas.

Seems a silly thing to do if the PS3's on the rear are fairly new? You should have the same brand/model at all four corners for optimal handling.

I agree and normally would, but I wanted the F1AS2 at the time of getting the PS3 but couldn't get them in time. At least they are two good tyres and not ditch finders!

The PS3 is not the PS2 replacement, it is the Pilot Exalto 2 replacement iirc. It isn't therefore quite the same type of tyre as the AS2 and I wouldn't pick it over the Goodyear as a result.

I went from Michelin Pilot Sport 3 to Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2. Quieter, lasting longer with no difference in grip, handling or braking in my experience and cheaper.

I had Eagle F1's on my tdi a3, all I can say about them really is that they made a wierd noise at 70mph, sounds like schreeching.

I've taken the plunge and bought Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2's ... my wallet is now £670 lighter. Will be interesting to see how they compare with the old CCS3's.

I have F1A2s and I have to say they're a great tyre so far. I was going to go for MPSS but managed to get a £100 discount for the Goodyears.

When you're spending that much on tyres they're much of a muchness and it is down to personal preference.

I loved my AS2s, wet grip was insane and I didn't loose much feeling over the rock hard run flats that I replaced. Wear rate was as expected, about average, and they even survived Donington without melting, blistering or cracking (the usual BS horror stories)

Having said that, I'm now due a new set of boots I'm considering giving the V105s a try.

I used to run Falken 452's on my Focus ST but they were replaced by another model which was getting marmite reviews at the time so I weighed up other options.

Looking for tyres which had decent rim protection (only downside of the Falkens) I ended up going for the F1AS2's and can't fault them. Seem to grip well enough and never given me any scares.

Not noticed any concerns with tyre noise though my car isn't the quietest anyhow, same goes for fuel economy. Got about 10K on my 19's and still got life left in them, plus got a set on my 18's as well which I swap over to for winter.

Only thing I noticed when they first went on my 19's was they felt a bit soft even being XL rated. But gotten used to them now and more than happy using them.

Wait, you have a set of winter tyres which are the same as your summer tyres, but on 18" wheels instead of 19"?

What? :confused::p
