Hi guys, im just putting together a gaming rig for my living room and have plans for this and would love peoples comments, not built anything in a few years and never a small pc so no doubt ive over looked something over so if anything is overkill, not required etc.

Main purpose is for a 1440p living room gaming rig to connect to my sony 65" 4k tv for gaming.

Any advice or help would be appreciated.

The graphics card is a Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1070 Mini ITX OC 8GB GDDR5 Dual-link DVI-D HDMI DisplayPort PCI-E Graphics Card - which they dont stock at OC so need to source somewhere else - again open to ideas.

Corsair Carbide Series Air 240 High Airflow PC Case - Black

Super Flower Golden Green HX 650W "80 Plus Gold" Power Supply - Black
Kingston HyperX Predator 8 GB (2x4GB) DDR4 PC4-25600C16 3200MHz Dual
Samsung 500GB 850 EVO SSD 2.5" SATA 6Gbps 32 Layer 3D V-NAND Solid
Cooler Master V8 Version 2.0 Triple Tower High Performance CPU Cooler

5820K is overkill for gaming only, look at 6700K or 6600K, plus these will overclock a little more as well. I would also aim for 16GB ram as your budget doesn't appear too tight.

Are you set on that case? I would have thought maybe something like the Node 202 or Silverstone Raven would be more suited to living in the lounge? These will also take full size GPUs but low profile CPU coolers, and with the GPUs being the hottest component these days they seem more sensible.

thanks for this, i thought the cpu may be a bit over thanks for that !!

no i wasnt set on the case i have the 510 carbide and thought itd be quite funny to have the black smaller version downstairs but i love that node 202 it looks perfect and will add in another 8gb to make it 16 thanks mate :)

Thanks for that, youve all given plenty of food for thought.

I think its gonna be best cutting down the CPU and adding 16gb but i definitley prefer these console like cases such as the Node and Raven.

Out of interest, am i best doing what im doing with my build, a friend of mine reckons for £1200 im best cutting some corners (possibly upping my budget by £200) on the overall components and focusing on a 1080 within that build, what do you guys reckon to that and any recommendations for a 1080 build at all ?

The Coolermaster CM 110 is a cube case and scored major points with my sister-in-law. It looks like a speaker. It also takes a full-sized ATX PSU.

You don't need a 600W PSU - a 450W one will do - and you're not going to be overclocking, so save a little money and don't bother with a K-model CPU.

And OCUK do stock the Gigabyte card.

You'll need to add the CM 110 case.

You list looks good, just couple of points I would make. I had that PSU before I went with the Corsair SF, I sent it back as it was quite noisey with a clicking fan and whirring noises under medium load, reading reviews its quite a common issue with the Silverstone SFX-L PSUs. The Corsair unit its much better, higher quality, silent and a bit smaller to boot, which will help your cable management. The 450w will be fine for your build, 600w is nice but probably not worth the extra (I had included it in my spec above but its not really needed thinking about it more).

Secondly the 1080. Its about ~20% faster than the 1070 but quite a bit more than 20% more expensive so its not as good value for money. Not that you shouldn't get it, as it would allow you to play with higher details at 4K :)

The FTW version is also taller than the standard Founders Reference cards (taller than the bracket at the back), so it will be a tight squeeze, but looking at everything it will all fit but just be aware it will be a bit tight at times when installing it all :D

The CPU cooler will also allow a mild overclock on the 6600K providing you don't ramp the voltage up too high. I would imagine something around 4.4ghz will be fine.

Thanks Daaaveee much appreciated

So following your advice then how does this look ? does it all fit ?

Seem a lot for such a small case. Is that the top end of your budget?

No its not the top of my budget but i dont feel i need to spend a lot more for what im looking for from what ive been told ?? The key part of it is making it small for my front room TV though but im open to ideas....as small as possible (console like) but without any overheating issues. It could be bigger but i dont want to make it larger without a specific need to if that makes sense ? something i wanna easily unplug and move around the house or take to a friends if needed.

Do you think there will be any issues with this selection at all ?

I built something similar and I'm not sure how suitable it would be for a living room. Defiantly not while gaming anyway.

I would be tempted to go with a Xeon E3 1240l or 1260l v5. They sip power and require very little cooling but still offer a lot of performance. You could probably passively cool one.

The other concern would be the Asus Turbo card. From what I've read the GTX1070 can be a PITA for coil whine and I'm not sure on the Asus blower cooler. I'd possibly look at a reference 1070 or 1080.
