Hi guys,

I've just gone to sort my work bag out (yippee another day in the orifice) and I've accumulated a whole bunch of Micro-USB (with noggins to convert to USB-C) and USB-C cables.

I imagine I've bought new ones as the old ones have become flaky but I've lost track of good and bad ones. Is there a way to test cable quality in a semi basic way?

I recall some were terrible for data transfer, others had 'lose' cables, others probably just dead.

USB cables do vary for both data and power. One cable that supports 100watts of power may not even support full USB 3 speed for data and only transfer at USB 2 speed for example. It's a massive mess of standards and specs that just confuses. There isn't really an easy way to test cable specs without sending large files back and forth, then testing what charging speeds are like with each cable on the same fast charger that supports the widest range of standards like USB-PD with PPS, QC3.0 and above etc.

One thing I can say for sure though, you are unlikely to get the fastest data or charge speeds on cables that have an adapter converting them from Micro-USB to Type-C etc as those cables are too old and don't have the capability or internal chips to offer anything but basic specs in general.

Thanks @mrk - I've just done a whizz around the house and tested cable/plug combos.

Ended up with mostly micro-USB-to-USB-C-noggin for charging as they hit 2.7A quite easily, and then reserved my native USB-Cs for data transfer and CarPlay in the Seat.

My Merc hated all of the Anker cables and wouldn't play ball with Android Auto at all. Like nada. Like disconnected.

Is there a go-to cable brand for something super reliable? Android Auto being the prime use case. For some odd reason my Jabra 75t charging cable was the only one that worked in the Merc but can't see this lasting too long.

AH the Amazon Basics cable range are fully compliant with standards and decently priced and made so I'd just get some of those
