I have an old aurora r4 whose motherboard is failing and needs a replacement.
I need a MicroATX form and an Intel processor and am thinking of a minimum processor of intel Core i7-8700 but can be later.
What would you suggest for the motherboard?

What's your budget?
Also does your dell have proprietary power supply connectors/ usb ports? If it does, you'll need more than a motherboard.

budget is £500 and all the parts are original Dell.
yeah so Dell (and HP and Lenovo etc) use proprietary motherboards and power supplies almost all of the time.

You could get a used motherboard from eBay and a good PSU and that would work really well but keep in mind that often a CPU will outlive a motherboard.

You could put the money towards a new machine but that's up to you and your use case - a cheap AM4 B550 motherboard and an AMD 5600 or 5700X CPU would be a big performance uplift and not that expensive.

I've put together this build but there are two points, 1) I don't know which PSU to suggest, this was a price placeholder merely to work around your budget and 2) you'd need a dedicated GPU for this as the 5700X doesn't have an iGPU and the Intel B580 might be overkill for you but it's still good to see pricing as a whole.

Hope this helps

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £605.94 (includes delivery: £7.99)

It looks like I wont be able to do the changes due to lack of funds so will give up the rescue of this box and save up for a new one.

I will not be just scrapping it. I will look into selling once I have a replacement. Its just not doing the jobs I wanted so they are now on hold pending a new system arrival.
Keep an eye open for used AM4 systems as well - you don’t need to buy a whole new rig for AM4 since it’s not that old and even a B450 motherboard is fine.

Times are tough and expensive so hold tight and hopefully the new year is favourable for you
