There is one in the MM and i'm wondering how this would fair for the complete beginner?

What does the micro four thirds mean?

For the money with two lenses, I'd say it's a good buy. If you decide it's not for you and sell it on a few months down the line you won't lose money on it. Read the below if you like, but I can't promise it won't go over your head as a beginner lol.

Not wanting to come across as a pedant, but the e-520 (or any Olympus E camera) isn't a 'micro' four-thirds camera. It's just a four-thirds. The image sensors are the same size, the only difference is that the micro cameras don't have a mirror mechanism, so you ever use the screen or buy a separate electronic viewfinder. The e-520 works just like a traditional DSLR, a real viewfinder.

Four-Thirds sensors are smaller than typical Canon-Nikon sensors, half the size of a 35mm negative, but still double the size of what you'd find on a typical point 'n' shoot.

The e-520 itself is a good camera, a good base for what you can pick them up for. But don't buy it with the idea of investing in lenses for the system as the traditional four-thirds system has been phased out by Micro Four-Thirds now so you won't see any new lenses being released for the platform.

The autofocus is lacking with only 3 points to choose from.

The only issue with Four-Thirds cameras, especially the 10mp onces, is image noise. It will become quite apparent at 800. But the e-520 has sensor based IS, which means you can drop the ISO compared to other cameras, so as long as you don't need a fast shutter speed you'd be fine.
