Microphones/line in

I want to connect a handheld microphone to a portable media device, but I have no microphone input sockets, only line in.

I believe I can't just use any old microphone for this, so what do I need?

Either a preamp to boost the mic to line level or a microphone with one built in. No other way around it im afraid!

Getting (or getting someone you know that is handly with a soldering iron to make you) a mic preamp is the easiest way because then you can plug in any mic you like to it rather than hunting one that outputs at line level.

I know mic preamps are pretty easy to build, but I'm not skilled enough, so the 'find one that works' option would be easier.
