Microserver FreeNAS setup

Hi, I recently purchased an N36L Microserver for the purpose of a backup setup for my current home server. My plan is to run FreeNAS and fill it up with disks to do backups on however I'm not sure which is the best setup for FreeNAS as something just doesn't sit right with me about using a USB drive for the OS (USB rot etc)

So is this the only good setup and am I worrying over nothing or is there a better setup such as using a small SSD and an add-in SATA/RAID/HBA card?

The boot USB failing will leave the data stored on the arrays intact.

As long as you have a backup of the FreeNAS config (which you should have anyway) replacing a failed boot USB shouldn't be an issue.

I know but I was just wondering if there was a better method as surely when FreeNAS performs random writes it will deteriorate the sad faster than normal?
