Not sure if it should go here or software

but essentially i'm looking at getting a HP Proliant Microserver and was wondering which OS would be best

I'd want it mainly for
- sharing files across network/media center
- bittorrent downloading
- web server
- and any other servers required like (for sake of example, say ts3, old cod)

would just be upgrading RAM to 8gb and 2x 2TB drives in RAID1 if that makes any difference

Which os would be best for this?

You can't continue to get more (uni should terminate your account), but the ones you have will continue to be valid.

"You are limited to ordering 1 of this product"

Although your university could just set you up another account and download another :P The university under this scheme (DreamSpark Premium) pays so much per year and we get access to the likes of W8, W7, and basically every bit of software microsoft sells except some packages in office.

is there any reason to use standard instead of essentials?

Guessing essentials just strips back some of the stuff not required for a home office/small business?
