I gather that Microsoft Defender has taken to warning people not to install CCleaner. Microsoft justifies its advice on the basis that CCleaner offers users who install or update it the opportunity to also install any one of Avast, AVG, Chrome or the Google toolbar with the default set to "Yes".
I have for years advised people to install and use CCleaner (which I believe takes its name from something like CarpCleaner). However, I am 100% opposed to software that defaults to installing some PUP or even does it without bothering to ask. On that basis I am now encouraging people to install BleachBit.
Despite this, I do find CCleaner good for searching out duplicate files
