To be honest, it would make a lot of sense to make the next xbox simply an enhancement of the current model...
A bit like upgrading a pc, keep the same OS, controllers, and then use a more powerful CPU and GFX with enhanced memory architecture...
Yeah ok, so it will run DX12 but it will still run DX9 games, as well as the new DX12 games, just like a PC...
Everything else can simply be keeping certain items in the console rather than having them as plugins... wifi for example...
That way you can have much more chance of retaining backwards compatibility...
Wii controllers are a mere novelty, there is nothing about the Wii controller that couldn't be implemented on any other console if the software support is available... it isnt a function of the console, its a function of the controller/interface...
Main problem is, all that motion sensing is actually pretty expensive to implement, making additional controllers more expensive...
The main reason PS2 was so popular is that it had backwards compatibility and was pretty much the best available at launch... This time MS got the 360 out well ahead, and the PS3 doesnt offer enough to make people upgrade from a 360...
If MS can keep up the momentum, retaining backwards compatibility, so that people don't have to retain their old consoles, then they really could sign the playstations death warrant... just like Sony did to Sega...
The main advantage we have from MS is that the Xbox now shares a LOT with the PC.. That is gonna make games more portable, and MS's objective of getting Windoze games alongside Xbox games in Blockbuster a genuine reality... That in turn increases revenues for games designed for Xbox and PC, reduces lead times for those 2 platforms, and is a win win for everyone..
Now, if only MS could introduce "XBox Live for PC" so that PC gamers can join Xbox gamers online...
Could be the next step to reduce PC piracy..
