Microsoft censorship over service feedback

A brilliantly constructed letter and I find myself agreeing with all of it.
Whats this platinum level on live all about?

Its their forum they're perfectly within their rights to take it down. OCUK don't allow criticism of their service on their forum either.

This whole service over xmas just sounds like whining to me, I used it sporadically over xmas, both for downloading and playing games and noticed no problems.

Not that I'm really bothered about the recent issues, but the letter does really make you wonder what your actually paying for. A friends list and that's about it, great.

Well actually we get the friends list for free, we pay to be able to play online, which is the bit that is broken.

Unfortunately, whatever console you own everything said in that letter is true and I agree with him 100%. It's a good service they offer when its working, but the fact that an identical service can be had for free makes it look overpriced for what it is.

Even though you can join the same game as people on your friends list I do miss my PC for gaming as I preferred having a big list of favorite servers (Anyone remember ASE?).

I also agree 100% with the below point he made (With Halo 3 as the exception as I didn't experience any lag at all in this game) - I remeber Burnout Revenge and DOA4 being particularly bad:

Despite the fee for Xbox Live, networking is almost entirely peer to peer reliant. There are no dedicated servers for games, something which has been long available to PC games with no online fee. The average residential high speed internet connection often does not have an upload bandwidth capable of properly supporting large amounts of players

Even though its a lot cheaper to start playing a game on the 360 compared the PC, I'm sure over time all these extra charges for XBL start to add up. This idea of buying maps also annoys me. I remember the quake 3 days where I could download 1000 new maps if wanted to, copy them to my aptly named 'maps' folder and play.

MS should really take note of that letter, as I'm sure it represents the sentiments of a large number of live subscribers. It is quite weird how his gamertag is now mysteriously 'invalid' ;)

I know. With most games being p2p hosting, it's not actually costing them much/ if anything.

The friends list is just about all we get for out money.

I know, i have long said we should get the multiplayer gaming for free, and make all the bells and whistles that people go on about (yet i don't think a lot of users will use) 40 quid a year.

And Suarve, it is going to be interesting how MS deal with UT3, since it is mod friendly on the PS3, i am curious to know what will happen on the xbox.

Don't you get the FR in the silver subscription?

It is nice having a centralized place to see what everyone is doing, the ability to start voice conversations, messaging, content download - however, this is all stuff i could do over 3 years ago for free.

Letters like this do make you think. I'm thinking especially hard as I played on a mates PS3 today. GFX wise its pretty much identical except is soooo quiet, i was sitting close to it aswell.

No doubt it'll be silly prices for every little mod. I really do miss PC gaming for this aspect.

Actually, I think you do. So basically were just paying for online gaming which they don't host servers for?

The cost isn't much, it would just be nice to get more for the money. Especially as the PS version is free.

The bit about DRM annoys me as well.

That means that if I ever buy a new console to replace the poorly built defective pile they sold me 2yrs ago, I'll not be able to play any of the Live Arcade games I PAYED FOR without being logged into Live.

Maybe not a big deal for some but if you work away a lot or move out and have no access you're pretty much screwed.

What I hate, and have only just saw this on my 360, is you cannot remove your credit card details, and from what I have just read, it automatically renews.

The sooner Home comes to PS3 the better imo.

Scort.

So you think the dozens and dozens of people on here and thousands elsewhere having problems are all wrong, just because on the odd occasion you used Live over Christmas it worked? What about the admission of problems by Microsoft themself? Honestly, theres no point posting if you are going to post such drivel.

The service recently has been nothing short of an embarassment for Microsoft. The letter brings up a number of valid points and the more you think about it the more we seem to be being charged for something that shouldnt cost anything, nevermind £40 a year. They even seem advertise more and more on your console now too.

Friends lists, demos, online gaming. Thats what I use live for, and all can be achieved through PC gaming for free.

Check majornelson' site too. The issue is also mentioned there too.

Yeap, even if your card has expired they continue to auto renew it. There have been quite a few posts on here with people trying to get their money back.
