Microsoft confirms it's dropping Windows 8.1 support

What?
It was never anything else.
You heed to keep windows upto date. So you need windows 8.1update1

What exactly is your shock.

Link? I thought it was 8.0 support was being dropped for.

Nope, because not everyone runs Windows 8.1 (if you got Windows 8, I think the only way of updating to Windows 8.1 is through the Store app, which obviously doesn't update to 8.1 automatically, as Windows Update would (if set)).

Windows 8.0 and Windows 8.1 Update 1 will get updates. Windows 8.1 Update 0 won't.

So nothing changes really.

So people are shocked because anyone that wishes to keep up to date needs to keep up to date?

I find it hard to believe this is being reported on at all

eh, Windows XP has only just finished support. Doubt Microsoft would be that stupid (well, actually after speaking to their tech support this week I'm not that shocked really if they did)

Errr...so Windows 8.1 is no longer supported if you don't install one of the updates for it?

Don't actually see anything wrong with that. Install the update and you are fine.

I'm surprised Windows 8.0 will still receive updates to be honest, with 8.1 being free in the store...

Some old CPUs don't support Win8.1 x64 ,for example I've one old Win8 PC which has AMD Athlon XP 3800+X2 cpu which can't be upgraded from Win8 x64 to Win8.1 x64(only can if I reformat and install 32 bit version) .

I'm not bothered really since that one I triple boot with two different Linux distros and my other two PCs are much more modern that both have Win8.1 Pro x64 with Update 1 installed .

Sooner or later, Windows 8.1 Update will be installed by default via Windows Update.

Windows 8.0 is still being supported because the main way to obtain 8.1 is via the store.

I still think putting 8.1 via the store was a dumb way for Microsoft to do it. Why it couldn't just be done in the way of a standard update through Windows Update (Optional at least at the start) I have no idea.

I love 8.1, but can't fathom why they didn't stick with the 'Service Pack' name, tried and tested.

The whole Windows 8 release mechanism has been a mess

Probably so people open up store and have a look.
Also probably why this update was done normal way as their attempt didn't work well.
