Has anyone done the MCSE or one of the similar microsoft courses? I'd like some info, what sort of previous knowledge is required? Also, how long will it take to get certified, and what's the cost...?

I'v looked around at the MS website etc. but I'd like someone's oppinion who has done this :)

Thanks!

Depends if you want to do it properly...Or learn braindumps :)

I did it properly (MCSA) in 2001, most people however don't..Hence the qualifications in my view are not worth the paper they are written on.

Can't remember the cost as my employer at the time paid.

Now work in Sales, better paid & enjoy IT as a hobby.

Make of that what you will ;)

you can do it without any prior experiance if you study hard, but it will proberly proove useless to you.

Certs are a Bonus on top of experiance. a Cert with no experiance to back it up = bad. Most employers will see you as a Paper MCSE.

depending on how much time you have to study I would suggest at least 6 months to do all 7 required exams

exams are about £88 each

Just finshed 10 MS exams in the last 3 months. Last one was today. Had 3.5 years (pretty intense) experience working for an outsourcing company (so many different networks to learn from).

Do somthing like a MCDST if u are looking for a simple qualifictaion that will get you a low end job, the better qualifications are very expensive and wont get you that far without some kind of experiance.

thats just my 2pence, i have not experiance in the field so i might me wrong, but i doubt you will get a well paid job just from spending a month at college and getting an mcse without experiance ..............

Yeah i've known a few paper MCSEs and they are easy to spot. (eg the "MCSE 2003 with Messaging" guy who didn't know what a recovery storage group was)

there is a catch 22 with IT jobs, what you need is a step on the "experience ladder" get a low end job that requires no experience or (rudimentary) qualifications, that why i suggested the MCDST, it is easy anyone could do one, and it would allow you to get a low end IT job, then you can think about saving up for a CCNA/MCSE etc, then you'll have experience and qualifications ;)
