Not sure how gospel this is, and it's written by Charlie "I hate everything" Demerjian... but it was interesting to read and may create some discussion http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquirer/news/2008/02/06/ms-cuts-windows-features

Microsoft cuts Windows 7 features - already

Bye bye DX11

By Charlie Demerjian: Thursday, 07 February 2008, 9:21 AM

THE 'SHORTHORNING' of Windows 7 has begun, features are being shed left and right. The latest one is graphics a API, DirectX 11 in this case.

From what we are told by reliable sources. MS was keen on having DX11 be part of Windows 7. DX10, which while technically pretty nifty, is saddled with Vista as an arm twist mechanism, so it is taking off like a water buffalo with bunions and a weight problem.

For Windows 7, MS basically pulled the mandatory DX11 requirement at the behest of one company that basically whined a lot. History tells us that if you throw a hissy fit, MS will screw itself over and cave in, look what they did to neuter DX10 when NV got all pouty. Now DX11 is gone, and the debate is about DX10, and whether it will even be mandatory.

If this sounds so absurd it borders on the surreal, think about this. Computers need to run Windows, and if MS specs the minimum reqs so high that the low end can't run it, well, they will turn 7 into MeIII just like Vista is becoming MeII. About half of PCs are sold with those crappy integrated graphics, and there is one company that won't make the cut there, so they cried to MS.

With three GPU vendors out there, this means that if DX11 is mandated, at least a quarter of the PCs won't run it, not to mention laptops, and that can't happen. The DX9 vs 10 as standard debate is also about the same thing, one company doesn't think they will have enough horsepower by then, so they moan.

In the end, it basically says that 7 is going to be an unlucky number. If they are already hacking at the few expected features now, imagine how much more is going to be cut when they are facing real deadlines? µ

Imo it's a bit too early to be crying about things like this... what does everyone else think?

Lol at the Vista MEII comment. Sure I read that somewhere before...oh yes, it was me! lol

Its true to some degree. MS have to play ball to the manufacturers. They can't release products that no one can or are prepared to support, or drop everything and make sure its W7 compliant.

I'm sure a lot of other features will be shed like the file system structure of Vista was.

Same old same old.

This is a good thing surely?

(Not that I can ever recall Microsoft publicly and explicitly stating that DX11 would be part of Windows 7 anyway)

Everyone was bitching about DX10 being a Vista only feature. So now that Microsoft has decided to seperate DX11's development from Windows 7, that likely means it will be back ported to Vista as well. Yet the "Daily Mail publications" of the tech media world will still put some anti-Microsoft spin on it.

the only feature i want in 7 (besides ones that exist now) is the ability to selectively install components during setup (and have 'default' or 'compact' or 'portable' presets) would cut install time, and the crap on your machine

basically i'd like it if there didn't have to be a program called '7lite' when it comes out :p

Remember we are still waiting for the new file system (WinFS) to be finished, which originally was supposed to be in Vista ;)

List of stuff removed from Vista

WinFS

Personally I think WinFS will make a big difference to Windows, must be a pita to sort out, compatability etc.

Not even sure where that article is going anyway. What's horsepower got to do with it? A teeny little SiS random chip can't play a DX9 game let alone a DX10 one, and it's the same for most of the entry-level solutions. Whether it's a HD2400Pro and 8400GS isn't going to make much difference if it's DX9, 10 or 11. It's not for gaming anyway.

I think WinFS is the same thing as the object file system component that was originally touted as Cairo by Microsoft in 1991, and demonstrated at the PDC in 1993 as being part of Win95.

Windows 7 wont be release until 2013 not 2009 -- Microsoft changed it mind the date of release as they dont want too hurry
Not true... although Windows 7 release will be driven by it passing beta quality successfully it'll still be aimed for late 2009 RTM (probably with a Feb 2010 public launch again).

Yeah because they didn't make it mandatory. Which is what this whole thread is about.
Looking at it and thinking about what we already know and historical info about DX and OS releases it looks to me like the "journo" in the article has just put a spin on a rumour for a good story.

DX11 could have been (and may yet be) a mandated part of Windows7 just the same as DX10 is a mandated part of Vista (i.e. it's not optional and you can't get it anywhere else). Even if DX11 is mandated as part of Windows 7 DX9 & 10 GPUs will still work as has been the case of every version of DX, included in an OS or not. They just won't get the DX11 features.

Nowhere you'll notice does it say a MS source said W7 would have been DX11 only. The writer is the only one to suggest that.

If DX11 is decoupled from Windows7 it just means that it may or may not make it into the RTM build, if it doesn't it may just appear as a DX release later (like DX9 did).

I'll be taking that particular article with a large pinch of salt...
