Microsoft email storage extortion

How have Microsoft got away with this?

You always used to have 15gb of email storage for your Outlook account. This is still the case...but in actual fact all attachments are now taken as part of your OneDrive 5gb allocation, so it is not the case at all.

This has hit my wife hard as all of a sudden she is several GB OVER the onedrive allocation and can no longer send emails with attachments. However, she is several GB UNDER the total email allocation (which still includes attachments....)

So basically, they are now saying. "Sorry, if you want to be able to continue to use your email address that you have had with us for over a decade, you have to spend days deleting most of your stuff"

I know its a free account, but its filled with ads now, and Microsoft are already worth an absurd amount of money.

Essentially they are just trying to force peopl's hand to give them £20 a year.

These greedy **** need a reckoning.

Your wife could create new Yahoo email account with free 1TB storage.

Yes, she could, but that obviously comes with a lot of work in migrating everything to a new email address.

It's such an awful thing to do. To just suddenly reduce storage by two thirds!

How long does the email go back to? You could connect to the mailbox using Outlook then just fully archive it, delete the whole mailbox and have it start from scratch.

Get a couple of 1TB external drives and back them up to them.

It's just a ***** thing to do.

If you reach your 15gb limit? Fine, no problem, you have to pay.

To suddenly just go: " Ha, no you only have 5gb now so essentially you are going to have to pay us £2 a month or face endless hassle/delete all your stuff"

Started back in February, although I can't say I've had an email or anything about it..... and the information floating around is incredibly vague, as is the information from one drive info pages.

Having said that... how have you only got 5GB of storage with MS... I'm sitting at 40GB on my main one, I gained 10GB due to some 'loyalty' thing (think it was when storage changed) and then gained another 15GB from camera roll (installed the android app, never used it...). Now I have no clue if that storage will work with the changes but I've got 6GB showing up in my storage info so I'm assuming it's working fine....

They started rolling it out from Feb, but it only hit my wife's account the other day. It wasnt just an instant change for everyone on one day.

It is misleading, because on your account it says you have 15gb for email, including attachments etc.....but then the 5gb Onedrive says that that also now includes email attachments, meaning you only actually have 5gb for your email (or i guess you have 15gb for just plain emails, but only 5gb worth of attachments )

Yes terrible that their completely free service has some annoyances for those too tight to pay.

A. It isn't really "free" as they include adverts. People still can complain about the behaviours of a company providing a product with revenue based on advertising. They aren't doing it out of the kindness of their own hearts.

B. The issue is that it is quite obviously extortionist type behaviour. They get a collosal userbase of people using a hotmail/outlook email address, and then suddenly make it unusable for most/introduce a massive pain in the **** process to get it working again unless you pay.
