Microsoft Essentials - No virus database updates

I have installed MSE on my Netbook. Unfortunately there are no automatic virus database updates.
Thery are supposed to update daily at the time that Windows Update is scheduled for (not on boot up)
Has anyone used third party add-ons to facilitate updates or have any other advice.

Open up MSE and click the update button?

That is manual not automatic. You are supposed to get automatic updates when Windows Automaic Updates are scheduled.
This does not happen although I know this problem has been around for some time on MSE. I thought that perhaps a remedy had been found.
I do not want to have to manually update it and would prefer it to perform like other AV software.

It automatically updates before each scan ( there's a tick box in the settings )
