This has come up quite a bit lately and it now seems MS are following the same route as they did with the 3RROD

Microsoft’s confirmed it’s to extend 360 hardware warranties for those suffering the increasingly infamous E74 failure.
“While the majority of Xbox 360 owners continue to have a great experience with their console, we are aware that a very small percentage of our customers have reported receiving an error that displays ‘E74′ on their screen,” the firm said in a statement.
“After investigating the issue, we have determined that the E74 error message can indicate the general hardware failure that is associated with three flashing red lights error on the console. As a result, we have decided to cover repairs related to the E74 error message under our three-year warranty program for certain general hardware failures that was announced in July 2007.”
If your machine suffered from an E74 previously, and you had to pay for repairs, Microsoft will refund you in the coming 4-12 weeks.
If you get the E74 message it essentially means your machine’s cooked.

Nice to see not only are they doing for future instances but they are also refunding anyone who's had an issue in the past. I've had to pay for 2 repairs for my consoles being outside so looking forward to getting some money back from MS! :D

Damn :( ;)

Joking aside it's a good move by MS, but I've always thought that the extended 3-year warranty should have covered E74 too, after all it is down to the same design flaw as RROD.

my xbox got this error the other day. its still within its 1st year warranty so i called up the store i got it from.

they told me to deal direct with microsoft but why should i have to deal with it? surely microsoft increasing the warranty to 3 yrs for this fault is proof in itself of a inherent design flaw?

awsome , never had a ROD but the DVD drive did fail about 12months ago leading me to lose all A/V with no errors at all oddly , evey so offen now i get this E-74 error and some times it takes 2 or 3 trys to boots but then its fine.

I wonder if i should do something about this now even though it dos'nt do it every time

in 12 months go to the retailer & don't budge - it's their problem :)
It's only the retailer's problem to action the repair process so it'll end up in the same place. The only difference is that it will most likely take longer as they are far less likely to book it in on the spot and secondly you'll have to give them your windows live login details so they actually can book it. Certain retailers will swap it but almost all of them now will send it to Microsoft for a repair.

Very glad to see this,

I mean what's then difference bewteen 1 flashing light and 3 flashing lights when neither are cause by the user?

This was there stance when it was 1 year warranty:

We reached out to Microsoft, asking what causes the E74 error, if it's been on an uptick, and why it's not covered when RROD is. Here's the official statement:

"E74 is a general hardware error on Xbox 360 indicated by a single red flashing light in the Xbox Ring of Light and an error message visible on the television. This error is unrelated to the three flashing red lights error and there is not a single root cause. We encourage anyone who receives this error to contact Xbox Customer support through www.xbox.com/support or 1-800-4-MY-XBOX. The majority of customers who own Xbox 360 consoles continue to have a terrific experience from their first day, and continue to, day in and day out." -source
