Microsoft Forces OEMs To Lock Devices Into Windows 8 Using UEFI

What a crap opinionated article.

Wtf is he on about, of course it doesn't render it as a useless general PC device.
This effectively makes it impossible to boot anything but Windows 8 on these ARM devices, rendering these devices entirely useless as general computing devices

Also no where has he quoted where they have said its locked, only that on wintel machines it needs to be avilable to be unlocked in bios. Arm devices do not show bios, what android or iOS device has a user enabled bios.

He seems to have no understanding of what portable devices are.

Over reaction and you have been taken in by a opinion piece an extremely bad opinion piece at that.

My word, its like nokia making you use mokia OS on a mokia phone that isn't a smartphone.
And apple with that naught apple OS, what a naughty bunch of people these software providers are.
Imagine making you use the software provided for the purpose provided.
Shocking.

OP, no comment, just a link, well done, I thought that constituted an infraction now.

The fact is people should be able to do what they like with the stuff they own and companies shouldn't be putting artificial restrictions and other barriers in the way, if anything they should be trying to sell more by making their products more open and friendly with proper standards in place.

I was given an old phone which i wanted to use but it was locked to a certain network, i wasn't willing to pay for the right to use it how i liked so i had to throw it away, these sort of business practices are inherently wrong, motivated by selfish greed and control, its disgusting.

.

So you wnat them to leave it Totaly open and a security risk.
These are mobile devices, you don't get bios options and the rest of the normal pc procedures.

Mindbogling.

Raging because I can't fiddle with my phone's BIOS tbh

:)

The low cost/locked down ARM netbooks/laptops it doesn't really matter. Do you fiddle with your fridges' firmware? You can have an x86 PC to play with too

Does not seem strange Microsoft taking this method really, as other people have pointed out phone / ultrabook lock-in etc etc.

No one complained when Apple did it blessed by the holy power of Steve Jobs who can do no wrong, why cant Microsoft?

My point of view it should all be open, but then again this is business really. People swallowed Apple's products and presented their rears in awe with anticipation. It's more likely that Microsoft wants in on this Apple action and will adopt their tactics to get it. Cut throat business world really. The action of Microsoft blocking the installation of unsigned OS does not bother me, but ironic Apple fan boys holding this up as a doing-a-microsoft does.

Software is a part of the product so if you dont like the product then dont ****ing buy it.

I hate when people say this kind of rubbish, don't like something don't x..., a pathetic comment that ignores the issue, it's a negative thing that could get out of hand and has at times in the past, like phone locks, just because most do it doesn't make it right, never make excuses for businesses, they're not people and would quite happily do horrible things to make a profit if they could get away with it.

It should have no artificial restrictions or seek to control the experience, same goes for apple, ive never bought an apple product because they're among the worst for this kind of stuff.

It's there for security, which is extremely important on mobile devices. Or do you want someone bypassing all your passwords and just getting all your info and passwords and in the near future NfC payments.
I don't. That is why secure boot is there and it's absolutely needed.
