Microsoft has no plans for Blu-ray add-on

Just as an aside, I'm wondering what is the future for HDTV? Right now, we have Blu-ray disc which holds 1080p, better than TV broadcasts which are 720p/1080i at most. HDTVs are 1080p at most. What happens over the next 20 years? Do we get HDTVs that are 8-megapixel, like 4 1080p screens together but still only 720p/1080i TV broadcasts? Therefore the only way to make the most of these 2160p TVs will be by a new form of optical storage with media encoded at 2160p?

Will that keep happening - that TVs get stuck at one resolution and other media jumps ahead in leaps and bounds with the two only achieving equilibrium every 30 years? I suppose it's hard to tell as TV has come such a huge way in the last 50 years with colour, widescreen, HDTV, etc. that it's impossible to predict the next 50 years.

I believe that in Japan they are testing/using broadcasts which are over 1080p. Don't remember the exact details though.

I didn't buy one as I wasn't sure if HD-DVD would win. Probably like most people.

Now we know it will be Blu-ray I would be more than happy to buy a BD player

I think it is down to the fact the general public like playing games, and don't care about HD films yet.

I agree with that 100%

I don't own a HD TV yet, haven't really any plans to in the future because I see no need. I watched a program to enjoy it, not to marvel at an additional several hundred lines of additional pixels.

My console is for games, I've not ONCE even put a film DVD in their to watch, I've a PC and dedicated DVD recorder for that.

I can't believe the attitudes of people on here. One minute their praising HDDVD, next they're screaming for BlueRay for the 360 but then say "Ooooo, can't watch films on it, it's too noisy".

Jeez!!

Microsoft has no plans for Blu-ray add-on
Says the attach rate of the HD DVD players was a disappointing 3%.

Speaking to EuroGamer, John Schappert, Corporate Vice President LIVE, Software and Services for the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft, has expressed his disappointment in the sales of the Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on.

"It was a 3 percent attach rate," explained Schappert. This suggest only around 540,000 units of the HD DVD add-on were sold to the 18 million strong Xbox 360 installed base.

"It wasn't one of the high-selling accessories if you will. The people who bought it knew what they were buying," said Schappert.

With Blu-ray having emerged as the winner of the high definition media war, although currently by no means the clear successor to DVD, Microsoft has been rumoured to be working on a Blu-ray add-on drive for the Xbox 360. However, Schappert has indicated this isn't the case, pointing towards poor sales of the HD DVD add-on.

"We have no plans to announce or anything like that right now," said Schappert. "But I'd also urge you to look at the attach rate for the HD-DVD drive."

looks increasingly like the 360 is going on the bay then to prepare a space for the PS3.

Played one last night and i'm mighty impressed, fan noise half of "my" 360 and the games are the same.

wireless link included and 40gb hard drive makes PS3 actually cheaper than an xbox 360.

The fact you can easily swap the HD (without voiding the warranty) is a bigger bonus.

So anyone know how to sell the 360 quickly?

YOU MEAN IT DOESN'T TOAST?!?!?!

I'm worried 1080 P resolutions etc will turn into how Digital camera's are today

THE NEW SONY BRAVIA 2150P TV!!! etc

Constant upgrade and no commercial standard

even if the Disk drive firmware is modded?

No one will touch it with a bargepole... the chances of it being banned from live are quite high, now or in the future...

Then again, I've heard stories of people trading them in without issue, since it's often just a quick power on test..

Do you not care at all about the graphics in a game then, or do you have double standards?

Thats a bit of a blanket statement, resolution does not equal graphics as you well know. Crysis running at the same res as say diablo 2 will look obviously better. You can't compare HD gaming and SD gaming to HD films and SD films because there are so many other factors.

It was a friendly jab, he knows I'm not being serious :)

HD allows you to enjoy movies/TV more imo. It's not all about sitting there admiring the extra pixels, it's about the experience being more vivid and immersive. Some movies really are much more enjoyable in HD. Gaming is massively better. I could not got back to SD gaming. When my big TV was away I tried to play my 360 on an SD TV and it was just no fun at all. Everything was so fuzzy compared to what I'm used to.
