I had the trial version of Microsoft Office 2007, and have been using it do edit all my word documents for the last year. Now, having removed it and downgrading back to Office 2000, I can't open any of the .docx files associated with Office 2007.

Is there anything I can do?

hey dude,

dont see how ms have screwed you over,

annoying as it is i know, been there. I dont think there is a doc x convertor, but can you not put the trial version back on, and then save the docs as office 2000 compatible. Time consuming depending on the docs you have, but i think thats your only option.

I dont know of any mass document convertors, plus using one there would be a good chance summat would get screwed in the conversion.

:(

It locks out completely. I don't think you have the ability to re-save the documents.

I'm a bit screwed at the moment because I have a 40 page script for a short film I'm making and production starts tomorrow.

It's a bit sneaky of them tbh.

To be fair you shouldn't have been writing anything important on a trial piece of software.

Can you not install it on another computer and then print the documents?

Not really sneaky at all. this is actually their new document format so its not like they've changed it just so you cant retrieve the docs after the trial. They also did warn you when you started the beta that any documents you created in it would be irretrievable after the trial.

Edit: nevermind

Doesn't it warn you when you edit a document created with an older version of Word that it will save as .docx ...?

Tried that and it doesn't work, at least not with Word 2000. It says the file path is invalid when I try and open a .docx document, where as before it did open it only to display a load of gibberish.

I'll have a look for the beta, otherwise I might have to break the law.

No need to break the law. Download a trial:

Use the trial until 31st March and make sure your documents are in the format you desire by then.

Oh. I thought they'd stopped offering the trial version now.

I managed to convert them although many of you wouldn't approve. I have deleted it now though.

It annoys me that you immediatly blame MS. The existing document format couldn't handle the changes they wanted to implement so they needed change it, and as it happens it's not backwards compatible.

You should know that they aren't compatible, the fact that it saves it as .Docx and not .Doc is a bit of an indication.

Don't blame MS, blame yourself.

Such a sensationalistic title for such a trivial user error. :)

Glad to hear that you eventually got it sorted though Tommy B, but you have to admit it was a bit lame to blame someone else for your own mistake.

The pathetic lack of support on their website is partly to blame. They should damn well release a fools tool for converting .docx documents back to .doc. As it happens, the utility I downloaded which supposedly does this didn't work.

Works fine here on Word 2003, and it says it's supposed to work for Word 2000. It could be the installation/uninstallation of Office 2007 that broke something the converter would use. Or another random incompatibility.
