Support for Windows phone is ending and I don't want to give up my old phone just yet. Microsoft Lumia 435 android rom: Is it possible, would it require me to root first, would I retain full functionality or is it limited? Would I be able to use all Android apps like a regular Android phone/up to date play store etc.

Are there any other downsides? Hope someone can help me out, thank you in advance.

If there isn't a rom for my specific phone is it possible to use another one?

You're better off just getting a cheap android handset. Any data you have will be lost anyway if the phone is wiped and the 435 was never really a flagship phone to begin with. I've got a 930 and 640 I need to move away from and the new handset route (for ~£120) is going to be far better and easier than trying to get a 4 year old phone working on an ecosystem it was never designed for.

Thanks for your reply, I've started looking:

1) Has anyone bought generic unbranded smartphones available on ebay etc? I'm hoping you/someone can advise pls! I'm a very light user mostly for wsapp and sometimes maps/gps when walking (no gaming and occasionally watch youtube videos) so was hoping to find something £40-£50.

There are others I'm looking at but they don't mention anything about the processor (sometimes it'll mention the number of cores but no name)? The specs seem way better than even xiaomi phones for the same money, I know there's gonna be no support updates etc. how important is that? Couldn't I just search for a custom ROM, try to upgrade to higher android version etc? Would it be difficult/impossible to find roms for an unbranded phone?
Also I've read that there's a possibility they could just be sneaky re-brands so potentially could be getting a xiaomi etc. phone for less?

2) I'm also considering paying a bit more if unbranded is a no-go. Xiaomi Redmi 7 3GB/32GB around £100 vs Xiaomi Mi Play 4GB/64GB if it's £6 more?
I like the extra ram and storage for only £6 more but the battery seems better on R7 and larger screen

I'd probably go with branded, the Xiaomi handsets get very good reviwews, but if you like the Lumia line then the current Nokias are definitely worth a look as they're vanilla Android with good security/OS updates.

You can get a Nokia 4.2 for £99 on Gearbest at the moment, also worth poking around on the other Eastern sites and browsing through the Chinese Phones thread here :)

I've been playing about with a couple of old Nokia Lumia phones probably the worse phones imaginable I've got to say but I do enjoy a challenge. The Lumia binbows phone I have is an RM-1071 model which was doing all kinda of weird stuff and I put it down to the OS being horribly outdated and I was ready to bin the phone because it was totally useless but once I removed the Micro SD card the phone started to function as it should, so something is wrong with the SD card rather than the phone, I was able to do some internet browsing on it and download FireFox web browser & UC browser but I couldn't open the files and I could not download anything from the Micro$haft Store for Zip, RAR files.

I've not given up yet, surely but slowly I'm making progress with it. I looked up the phones hardware specs which tells me they will work with another OS but before I attempt to flash the ROM with another OS with the strong possibility of turning it into a brick, I'm going to see what I can do on the original OS first in terms of finding work arounds to install some things like a more modern browser and a few other things. I suppose I could stick some things on a Micro SD card from my computer and then see if I can install things from the Micro SD card but I expect I will hit another wall with it. The phone was heading for the bin so I really don't care much if I end up bricking it but I thought I will have some fun with it first to see if I can make it into something more useful as I have nowt to lose.
