Microsoft on PC gaming: “we lost our way”, promises a better future

Complete BS. No chance they're refocusing on Windows gaming when they're investing their time in to the Xbox division.

On XB360...maybe...but seeing how close the XBONE and PC are in terms of architecture it might be the exact right time for them to focus on PC efforts without losing out on the console ones.

^^ This, looks like Microsoft realizes they need to so something before SteamOS corners PC gaming.. A free OS that brings more performance from your hardware.. I bet Microsoft are feeling the heat..

I can see Xbone and PC becoming a kind of unified platform via W8. Maybe even cross platform play..

This time AMD is getting behind Mantle and this doesn't need Direct X, Valve are making a free operating system that will also give low level access to hardware via OpenGL, which Nvidia is going to heavily support.

Microsoft know they need to do something over the next few years to keep PC gamers wanting the latest Windows OS, they have to act or face irrelevance..

Architecture doesn't imply this, a PC build is still needed. Too many people are taking cues from the X86-64 components as if it has an impact upon PCs. It really doesn't.

Meh.

Not really sure what they can do, if anything, that would really bother me in a positive way. Steam pretty much covers all bases for digital distribution and a social gaming system. The Xbox Games section of Windows seems really average too, it's behind platforms that do the same thing. I guess the only thing is supporting the games that they develop and making some 360 exclusives on PC that aren't just sub-par ports.

First EA now MS when are Activision and Ubisoft going to get in on the act?

They will do what they are doing now, tie the latest version of Windows and Direct-X together, so if a user wants the best game experience they are forced to upgrade.

Whist Steam OS and other APIs such as Mantel are a threat. Both are very fragmented, Steam OS will only work for Steam games and Mantel will only work for GCN GPUs. Whereas Direct-X offers a platform that works on all windows based PCs, until something challenges that the MS will still be in a dominant position.

Steam OS will only work for Steam games

The vast majority of PC game sales are on Steam though, so it's a massive threat to Microsoft, for all those gamers not to need Windows, if OpenGL gets more from hardware, and SteamOS is functional and free, I think Microsoft have to be a lil worried.

Competition brings out the best in company's though so maybe this will all be a good thing..

But not all of those sales work on Steam OS, my understanding is that some games will run in Steam OS and others have the streamed from a Windows PC.

Other publishers such as Ubisoft, and EA with their own distribution platforms still need windows. I can't see many people dropping Windows entirely for Steam OS as it is too limited in what it offers. I can see people maybe trying to dual boot it with Windows, and MS still get their money from the Windows licence.

I do agree with you about the competition aspect, Direct-X has been stagnating PC gaming for too long. But I don't view Steam OS as some magic bullet that will end its dominance. Maybe the best thing it may do is cause MS to get off their backsides and bring out some big advancement in Direct-X.
